Swans Cup – Opens AFL

Edmund Rice College was privileged to be invited to participate in the AFL Senior Boys Cup on the 3rd of May. This cup consisted of 4 other schools from around the Illawarra region ; Kiama High School, Smith’s Hill High School, Holy Spirit Bellambi and Keira High School, which was played in a round robin format.

Organised by AFL NSW/ACT, these games were played at North Dalton Park and Thomas Dalton Park. ERC’s first game was against Smith’s Hill. The team of 22 students started strongly, going through the whole game without conceding a goal, however a big upset occurred when one of our star players dislocated their finger and was rushed to hospital. Nevertheless we came out victorious in our first game 71 – 2, eager to move on to the next competition.

Next up, ERC versed Keira High. After letting in the first goal, ERC did not concede another point, winning 29 – 6. The next opponent was Holy Spirit. ERC fought hard, producing a 6 goal to 0 first half, before ending the game with a triumphant score of 59 – 13.

Edmund Rice then proceeded onto the grand final, versus Kiama High, a team thought to be our biggest rivals of the day. With a heavy wind going against ERC, the teams went into halftime level, before ERC got behind the wind and outran Kiama, winning 35 – 16. Going through the whole carnival undefeated, ERC are keen and prepared to progress to the next level.
