Our College

Principal's Welcome

Edmund Rice College is an independent Catholic boys’ school in the Edmund Rice tradition, catering for students in Years 7 to 12. Wonderfully diverse and inclusive in its nature, the College welcomes boys from all over the Illawarra providing young men with a wide array of educational experiences and opportunities.

A leader in boys’ education since 1926, our College has developed a reputation as a school that fosters the development of boys into fine young men.  Contemporary learning programs, state of the art facilities and extensive co-curricular programs inspire boys to be the best that they can be.

Learning at Edmund Rice College is honed to the individual offering a progressive, contemporary community of practice. We are committed to providing personalised high quality curriculum, wellbeing and co-curricular programs that enable lifelong learning in a safe and supportive environment for every student.

An Edmund Rice Education prepares young men to make a difference in the world. Service programs, leadership opportunities and community engagement promote values of compassion, dignity and humility. The act of serving others gives students a deeper understanding of the dignity and worth of all people in their natural world. They are challenged to articulate learning about their own spirituality as they make real-life connections to the marginalised.

Vision Statement

Edmund Rice College is a premier Catholic boys’ college in the Illawarra, dedicated to providing a transformative education that inspires young men to reach their full potential. As we celebrate our Centenary Year, we continue to honour our rich history while looking forward to a future of continued innovation and leadership.

Our Identity: The Four Touchstones

As a member of the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) network, our College is guided by the renewed Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition. These Four Touchstones describe our distinct culture and provide a practical expression of our identity in the contemporary world.

  • Liberating Education: Empowered by liberating teaching and learning experiences, we open our hearts and minds, so that we are hope-filled and free to build a better world for all.
  • Gospel Spirituality: Jesus’ invitation to love, justice, compassion, peace and faith, calls us to life-giving relationships within our communities and the wider world.
  • Inclusive Community: We welcome and celebrate diversity in our local, national and global communities, responsive to each person’s aspirations and needs, and committed to the common good.
  • Justice and Solidarity: We are committed to local and global justice and peace, grounded in a spirituality of action and reflection, inspiring us to listen to, walk with and learn from all creation, especially those who experience powerlessness.

A Century of Excellence

Founded in 1926 by Br T.A. McMahon with just 105 students, Edmund Rice College has evolved from its humble beginnings on Crown Lane into a thriving educational community of nearly 1,100 students at the base of Mt Keira. In our 100th year, we remain “Mindful of the Past, Focused on the Future,” continuing the “ERC Spirit” that has shaped generations of young men in the Illawarra.
