Luka Lesson “May your pen grace the page”
Words are powerful. They allow us to express how we feel about ourselves, our
communities, our world. Next week, the English faculty will be highlighting the power of
words in our inaugural English Literature Festival – Raise Your Words.
The highlight of the week will be workshops and slam poetry performances with our artist in residence – Luka Lesson. Thanks to a generous grant from ERC Parents and Friends Association, our students from Years 8-12 will become active participants in poetry
workshops held by Luka Lesson.
Luka Lesson is an Australian poet, rapper and educator of Greek heritage. His website describes his works as crossing between ‘the history of his family homeland, the fiercely political and the vulnerably self-reflective’. Lesson’s poem “May your pen grace the page’ is also a HSC Standard English text , therefore our senior students will have the opportunity to really engage with a live performance and discussion of the poem and his works.
In addition to the workshops, the English faculty will be hosting a night of Poetry and Pinot on Thursday 28 July. The night will involve students reciting their poems for Luka Lesson who will be judging the performances. Lesson will also perform. ERC’s Reel Talk club will also have a panel discussion around film. Everyone is welcome to attend the night from 5.30pm for a 6pm start in the Narandha Learning Centre. We would again like to thank the ERC Parents and Friends Association who have donated prize money for the students – with first prize being $300, second prize $200 and third prize of $100.
