COLLEGE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

Professor Shirley Agostinho and Dr Peter Andersen from the University of Wollongong met with Mr Mark Tyler and Mr Gerry Sozio to discuss a collaborative project with UOW (specifically with the Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH) to co-design units of work underpinned by the Cross Curriculum Priority, Sustainability and the General Capability of Critical and Creative Thinking.

CABAH’s research work is focused on understanding Australia’s unique biodiversity and heritage. This involves tracking the changes to Australia’s environment to examine the processes responsible for the changes and the lessons that can be used to continue to adapt to Australia’s changing environment. Professor Agostinho and Dr Andersen are both from the School of Education and their involvement in CABAH is to work with teachers to translate CABAH’s ‘new knowledge’ into educational materials through a co-design approach.

UOW will collaborate with Edmund Rice College where a small group of teachers and students will work with a CABAH researcher, Associate Professor Tim Cohen, to co-design educational materials based on the scientific knowledge uncovered by CABAH from their climate research projects. These educational materials will feed into the Geography learning and teaching program. Two Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) specialists will also take part in the day to provide support about integrating the Cross Curriculum Priority, Sustainability and the General Capability of Critical and Creative Thinking.

Six Year 10 students and four teachers, led by Mr Tyler, will attend be attending UOW on Thursday 10 November 2022 to co-design units of work to be implemented at the College. In 2023, UOW will follow up with our College to discuss the implementation of the units of work.

This is an amazing authentic learning experience for our students and teachers where they will have the opportunity to work with UOW academics/researchers.
