From the Director of Learning & Teaching

As we come to the end of Term 2, it is an opportune time for your son to reflect on his Semester 1 goals and strategies. During the first Pastoral Care team meeting in Term 3, your son will have the opportunity to review and refine the goals and strategies he set for Semester 1.

Following are questions that you can ask your son to help him reflect on his Semester 1 goals and strategies:

  • How much have you progressed towards your goals?
  • What have you achieved and what has been difficult?
  • What changes, if any, do you need to make?

If your son tells you that he has not achieved his goal(s) or needs to change them, it is important to encourage him to take this as a learning opportunity. Mr Phil Britten, survivor of the Bali Bombing, who spoke to our College community late last year, says “don’t get discouraged if you miss your mark or change your mind, the process of goal setting will help you hit more targets than if you never did them at all”. Mr Britten goes on to say that we all experience ups and downs and we need to stay committed to do our best. A strategy he suggests is for your son to keep your goals visual, this will serve as a daily reminder to maintain his focus. In addition, he adds that it is important to have “someone in your life to keep you accountable to stay on track”. As a parent, your influence and support will be so valuable in supporting your son work towards achieving his goals.

Congratulations to all the students on the manner in which they have committed themselves to their studies during Term 2. I encourage all students to reflect on their learning throughout the term, and determine what worked well and what they may need to change during Term 3 to continue to grow as a learner.
