Dr Javed Badyari has been an inspiration to our community, sleeping out for 665 days in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers who are being held in indefinite detention. Last night students and staff from ERC participated in the Sleep Out From Home, joined by members of CBHS Lewisham! We heard from Jav and Pam Dunn via a video conference during the #SleepOutFromHome as to how they maintain the motivation to be in solidarity with others.
We were also joined by Amro and Sophie-May from SCARF who helped us to understand how people from refugee backgrounds add to the beauty of our community. Craig Foster, AM, spoke about his advocacy for those stuck on Nauru and PNG, while Senator Kristina Keneally and local MP Sharon Bird encouraged the students to engage with the political process to advocate for the changes they want to see. The message is clear, if you #OpenYourHeart, you can change the world.
