On the 18th of February, at Beaton Park Tennis Club the ERC Tennis Team competed in the Diocese Wollongong Open Tennis Championships. The team consisted of four top ranked players; Liam Zamuner, Josh Drew, Bailey Abella and Ari Ganassin with the addition of two reserves; Austin Petrie and Aston Rowles and our team photographer Jude Nunes.
The first match on the day was against John Therry Catholic College. Unfortunately for John Therry Catholic College where we were successful in winning all 6 sets of tennis. The second round of the day was against St Joseph’s Catholic College where the boys produced another victory, winning 6 sets to love and only conceding 12 games. A special mention to Austin who as a reserve won 6-3 in his set. Meanwhile Aston Rowles played the St Joseph’s reserve in a very entertaining demonstration match that he won convincingly.
On to the final where ERC competed against Mt Carmel Catholic College. The singles matches were a lopsided affair where Liam Zamuner came up against an excellent player where he battled right to the end eventually losing 6-4, a very courageous effort. Josh Drew won 6-1 in a match that was much harder than the score would suggest and Bailey Abela once again showed that he is a classy young player by toppling his opposition 6-2. Our youngest team member Ari displayed his talents in 6-0 win, he will be a player to watch as he gets older.
The doubles matches were a tussle with our pairing of Liam and Josh finding going down with a final score of 2 sets to 6. On the other hand Bailey and Ari played a very tight game to secure a 6-3 win.
Overall Edmund Rice College was victorious on the day with a 4 set to 2 score line.
Our boys played with great spirit and our reserves performed a great job. The team is now off to Bathurst for the Combined Catholic Championships where we hope their winning ways will continue.
