On Friday the 9th of June, Edmund Rice U15’s faced off against Kiama High in a thrilling encounter in Round 4 of the Bill Turner Cup. Despite the challenging weather conditions, both teams displayed excellent football. Kiama showcased their defensive prowess right from the start, with their backline standing firm and denying Edmund Rice any clear goal-scoring opportunities. Despite Edmund Rice’s persistent attacks, Kiama’s resolute defence held strong, and it was Kiama who struck first, taking the lead with a well-executed penalty. However, Edmund Rice refused to be deterred and continued to press forward in search of an equalizer. Their efforts paid off when Lachlan Taylor rose above the defence, connecting with a perfectly placed header in the bottom corner to bring the score level.
As the game progressed into the second half, the intensity heightened, with both teams battling for control of possession in the wind. With just eight minutes remaining on the clock, Edmund Rice seized the opportunity to take the lead. Haider Raad unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, catching the Kiama goalkeeper off guard and finding the back of the net, making it 2-1 in favour of Edmund Rice.
But the drama didn’t end there. In a final display of skill and teamwork, Christian Ugonotti delivered an impeccable cross into the box, and Dylan Rodrigues leapt into the air, directing a precise header into the net, extending Edmund Rice’s lead to 3-1.
Congratulations to the Edmund Rice under 15’s as they progress further in the Bill Turner tournament and are set to face the winner between Smiths Hill and Illawarra Sports in the NSW South Coast Regional Final.
