St Mary’s & Edmund Rice Year 9 Social Day

On Friday, 7th May, the Year 9 students of Edmund Rice College and St Mary’s College Star of the Sea met on the Edmund Rice College grounds, eager to participate in their annual social day. This years event was even held with even higher anticipation due to the cancellation last year. In Term 1, the social day was cancelled due to heavy rain; more rain in Term 2 threatened once again, but the day went ahead regardless, albeit with more indoor activities.

Year 10 students from both schools assisted greatly in the running of the day, demonstrating keen leadership skills and ensuring both staff and students enjoyed the day.

The large space that is the Edmund Rice Centre ensured that the sporting rotation went off without a hitch. Volleyball and basketball were the main physical activities of the day and it was fantastic to see all students participating well, including others and most importantly; having fun. Thanks to ERC’s Mr Belsito for running these events.

The trivia rotation was the opportunity for the Year 9 students to flex their academic muscle and the competition was fierce. Again, the combination of Edmund Rice boys and St. Mary’s girls ensured that the calibre of responses and team-work was high. Thanks to the St. Mary’s staff for running this.

The last and newest rotation was the Indigenous Cultural Awareness Workshop. It was fantastic to see the manner in which the students responded to these activities; incorporating skills such as: writing, listening, discussion, problem solving, debating and more; ensured that this activity engaged staff and students alike. Sincere thanks to Ms Neale for running this workshop.

Our thanks as a Year group to Mr Fields for organising the event, despite the many changes and delays due to weather. It was a fun and rewarding experience for all involved. We are all looking forward to the dance between the two schools, later in the year.

Mr Griffiths

Assistant Year 9 Coordinator
