The Year 7/8 Basketball team drew John Therry in the Diocesan knockout tournament (semi final) which doubled as the NSWCCC qualifiers. Even though our boys had not played much together, their communication, hustle and intensity was very impressive from tip off.
In a close tussle we emerged victorious 39-34. The final was against our arch rivals Holy Spirit. We got off to a slow start, down 13-20 at half time. In the second half the team rallied thanks in part to an inspirational effort from Austin Browne going down twice with an elbow injury but staying in the game and knocking down two clutch free throws to seal the win. Final score 40-33. Standout performers on the day were Austin Browne defensively and crashing the boards, as well as Noah Leaning strong work in the paint and Nakonyon Wrey’s pace and impact coming off the bench.
The team have now progressed as an automatic entry into the main NSWCCC Basketball Championships to be played at Billbergia Indoor Sport Centre, Camellia on Monday 30 October – Tuesday 31 October. Mr Fowler
The U16 team played really well against two strong opposition teams. Game 1 against Holy Spirit, we were up 12 -0 and led at half time by 19-14. They played physically but our team effort was better. We were down by 4 with a couple minutes to go and two late threes with seven seconds remaining put us into the lead 34-32, the final score.
Our next game was against Corpus Christi, a close game from beginning to end, we led most of the way but fell away at the end to lose 53-49. They hit a couple of big shots towards the end. Again, the boys played really well and were looking for each other with great team play. Plenty of positives to take away into next years competition. Mr Stutchbury
