Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we prepare to approach the upcoming Year 12 Graduation, I wish to commend the Class of 2026 for their continued and sustained application and their exemplary support of one another throughout their final year.
With the HSC Trials now completed, we extend our congratulations to the many HSC students who have recently completed their major projects. Across every faculty, the dedication, creative innovation, and determination displayed by our students exemplify the spirit of a liberating education. This commitment was showcased during recent events, such as the outstanding Industrial Technology Exhibition, and during last night’s Visual Arts Exhibition. Equally deserving of recognition are the sophisticated student compositions in Extension 2 English, the depth of research undertaken within History Extension, and the scientific inquiry demonstrated in Science Extension projects. We also look forward to the upcoming Hospitality Afternoon Tea opportunities, and wish our HSC music students all the very best for their exam performances.
The commitment required and shown for a major project is a true test of perseverance, requiring months of problem-solving beyond the standard curriculum. Completing these projects is a milestone that reflects not only our students’ level of commitment but also the strong partnership between home and school.
We extend our gratitude to our teaching staff for their tireless mentorship, as well as to parents and carers for your encouragement throughout this demanding journey. As the Class of 2026 enters these final weeks of preparation before their HSC examinations commence in Term 4, we remain immensely proud of their achievements and confident in the foundation they have built.

Within the next fortnight, a group of staff and students from Years 9-11 will be embarking on the 2026 ERC History / Science Tour to both Japan and Singapore and what promises to be an unforgettable experience for our students.
I have no doubt that our students will represent ERC with great respect and curiosity. I am very grateful to the dedicated staff, including Mrs Kylie Timmins, Mr James Clark, and Mr Jamon Thomas, enthusiastically led by Mrs Helen Lothian, for their detailed planning in ensuring that this journey is both enriching and safe. I wish all our travellers a safe and enjoyable trip, and we look forward to hearing the wonderful stories upon their return.
***
It was wonderful to see so many fathers and grandfathers gather for breakfast this morning to celebrate as a community. Thank you to the members of the P&F who generously gave their time as well as a great number of staff who also assisted in making this such a successful event. I would like to offer my best wishes to all the ERC dads, grandfathers, and father-figures for a wonderful Father’s Day celebration this weekend, and I offer the following prayer:
Dear God,
We offer our gratitude today for the gift of fatherhood in all its forms.
Bless new fathers with wisdom and resilience as they build their families.
Thank you for the spiritual fathers and mentors who offer steady
Guidance when we need it most.
And for those fathers, grandfathers, and father figures no longer with us,
We hold their stories, their love, and their memory with deep thanks.
Amen.

Spelling Stars Bound for the State Finals!
Our school community is buzzing with pride as eight of our incredible students have officially qualified for the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee State Finals!
The journey, however, is just getting started. If our state finalists manage to spell their way to the top, they will move on to the prestigious National Finals. The stakes for the final round are higher than ever, offering some truly life-changing rewards for our young wordsmiths.
Three ultimate national champions will win an unforgettable trip to Canberra to meet the Prime Minister in person! Alongside this extraordinary honour, each national winner will take home a brand-new iPad and a $250 HarperCollins book pack to keep their literary passions firing.
The rewards extend to our entire school community, too—each champion’s school will receive a generous $1000 voucher to spend on new books, cutting-edge technology, or vital educational equipment and supplies. Runners-up will also be rewarded with fantastic book packs, and every single student who stepped up to participate in the competition will receive a certificate recognising their effort and courage.
Whether our eight state finalists end up marching into Parliament House or simply expanding their horizons, they have already achieved something extraordinary.
Please join us in congratulating our eight spellers and wishing them the absolute best of luck as they prepare for the State Finals. Keep practicing, spellers—we are all cheering you on every step of the way!

National Science Week 2026
The school theme for the 2026 National Science Week was: Seeds of Science – Nurturing knowledge for all.
This theme allowed students to explore the power of curiosity, inquiry and shared learning in growing scientific understanding. Just as seeds need the right conditions to grow, knowledge flourishes when it is nurtured, shared and applied to real-world and authentic challenges across all the scientific disciplines.
The Science faculty at ERC invited students to participate in a range of activities that explored how ideas take root, develop and spread – from the first spark of a question to the sharing of discoveries that benefit the wider community.
On Monday, students created seed bombs with the Science staff. Seed bombs are small balls made of clay, soil and seeds that are then tossed onto the ground at a time and location of their choosing. Students learn about the conditions needed for plant germination and growth. Students assembled 3D printed dinosaur fossils to make a mystery dinosaur with Mrs. Timmins on Tuesday, and also made seed paper cards on Wednesday. The light microscopes were used to observe prepared slides of different seeds on Thursday. Miss. Berry ran the Science trivia competition on Friday and asked students questions from a range of Science subjects, including a picture round based on the Science Week theme. Congratulations to Aaroz Poudyal on winning the 2026 Science Week Trivia Competition.
The “Guess What’s in the Box” competition was held for students throughout the week. Each day a clue was released to assist students in guessing what might have been hidden in the box. Students placed guesses inside the mystery box and the winning entry was drawn on Friday morning. The clues for this year’s mystery box were:
- Monday’s Clue: “Just speak your idea out loud.”
- Tuesday’s Clue: “I have a single glass “eye” so you can see what I’m thinking before I share it with you.”
- Wednesday’s Clue: “I am a painter with no paint; a writer with no pen.”
- Thursday’s Clue: “I feed on rolls of special paper and everything I spit out has a sticky back.”
The winning entry belonged to Ryan Evans from Year 9 with his guess of a “thermal label printer”. Congratulations Ryan, we hope you enjoy using your imagination to print unique science themed stickers.
A massive thank you to all the science staff, especially Mrs Massanova and Mr Moran, for all the effort in preparing and running activities during lunch. It is great to see such a wonderful opportunity provided to students once again.

As We Approach Graduation
As we prepare for our Year 12 students for graduation on Friday 18 September, we took time out of the regular school day to allow them to reflect as they come to the end of their Year 12 journey. the Year 12 Reflection Day held on Wednesday 26 August. The day provided a vital opportunity for the young men to step back and decompress following their HSC Trial Examinations. It allowed them to look at the bigger picture and set both personal and learning goals for the HSC and life thereafter.
The morning commenced in the Chapel with a whole-cohort Liturgy centred around the idea of becoming Men of Honour and Men of Hope for the future. Guided by a reading from the second letter of St. Peter (1:3-11), the liturgy challenged the students to live lives that reflect the values of the Gospel. Placing sacred items, including the Year 12 candle and the image of Blessed Edmund Rice, into our sacred space, the boys reflected on their individual vocations and how they can serve as honourable role models in the world today.
Following the opening service and an address by guest speaker, founder of #talk2mebro and ‘old-boy’ Jack Brown, the cohort rotated through three core workshops designed to support their mental health and academic preparation:
- Soul Drumming: A dynamic session focused on fun, releasing exam stress, and playing to the same collective beat as a cohort.
- Talk2MeBro: A practical workshop delivering breathwork and essential coping skills for overcoming high-stress periods leading into the HSC.
- HSC Mentoring: Small group sessions facilitated by Old Boys from the Class of ’23 and ’24 (Marcus Meogrossi, Luca Piacentin, Elias Logue, Louis Villella, Patrick Sirianni, and Kascha Cervoni). The former students shared practical study strategies, balanced life advice, and guided the boys through a trial exam reflection and HSC goal-setting process.
To wrap up the day, the cohort headed to Shepherd’s Oval and the ERC Centre for a high-energy House Cup sports competition. House classes went head-to-head in indoor soccer, cage ball, and tug of war, demonstrating outstanding cohort spirit and unity. After a hard-fought series, Waterford emerged victorious as House Champions.
Ultimately, the day was a memorable blend of spiritual grounding, practical preparation, and vibrant camaraderie as our Year 12 boys entered their final weeks of school.

Legacy Luncheon
On Friday the 21st of August, 10 students from our Year 10 cohort attended the Illawarra Legacy Luncheon. This was a great day for all students to become educated about what the people that have been through combat go through, but what the people that have lost a partner in combat continue to go through. Guest speaker Mark Wales spoke about his journey through the SAS and what he went through. This was a valuable experience for all that attended. Some of the tasks students at ERC undertook were, greeting the people attending the event, and selling raffle tickets for Legacy. Everyone that attended the event really enjoyed themselves.
Thanks for the opportunity to write this.

Pastoral Care
Empowering Student Voice, Safety, and Wellbeing
As we navigate Term 3—our designated Wellbeing Term at Edmund Rice College—our pastoral program remains firmly anchored in positive psychology and our My Strengths framework. We know that young men flourish when they feel safe, connected, and empowered to use their personal strengths to make positive, proactive choices.
This week, our students across all year groups engaged in key pastoral initiatives focused on advocacy, anti-bullying, mental health awareness, and school-wide strategic planning.
Student Advocacy: Standing Up to Bullying & Supporting Peer Wellbeing.
During this week’s Pastoral Care lessons, students across Years 7 to 12 participated in targeted Student Leaders Advocacy sessions. These student-led workshops focused on national wellbeing campaigns, including Bullying. No Way! and the upcoming R U OK? Day. Rather than focusing purely on rules, these sessions leveraged positive peer leadership to build an inclusive school culture. Our boys explored practical strategies for: Active Bystander Behaviour: Empowering students to safely step in, offer support, or report unkind behaviour using our College procedures. Meaningful Connection: Equipping students with the language and confidence to ask their peers “R U OK?” and offer a listening ear. By encouraging our young men to step into the identity of supportive, empathetic brothers, we reinforce that a safe school environment is something we actively build together every day.
Annual Student Wellbeing Survey: Shaping Our Future.
On Thursday, our entire student body participated in our Annual Student Wellbeing Survey during Pastoral Care time. In positive psychology, giving students a genuine voice is essential for fostering a sense of agency, belonging, and purpose. This comprehensive survey provides our Wellbeing Team with invaluable data on how our boys experience school life, their social connections, and their emotional wellbeing. We do not view this data as a static snapshot, but as a vital planning tool for 2027.
Looking Ahead in Stage 5 and Stage 6
As we look toward the remainder of the term, our senior year groups continue to demonstrate grit and leadership: Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10): Our Stage 5 students are preparing for their upcoming Stage 5 Pastoral Care Assembly in the ERC Centre, where we will gather to celebrate positive academic growth, peer support, and co-curricular achievements. Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12): Year 11 students are putting their final study systems into place as they enter their Preliminary HSC Examination period in Br Pelin Hall, while Year 12 prepares for their final Graduation and Mass celebrations. We thank all our families for your ongoing partnership as we support our young men to grow into resilient, compassionate, and grounded leaders.
💡 Strength Focus of the Fortnight:
“Social Intelligence & Kindness
- “The Habit: Over the next two weeks, make a conscious effort to reach out to a classmate or friend you haven’t spoken to in a while and ask how they are going.
- The Why: In positive psychology, exercising Social Intelligence—being aware of the motives and feelings of others—builds strong relational trust and fosters a culture where everyone feels seen and valued.

Director of Pastoral Care & Wellbeing
Building Bridges together- Small acts, big impacts!
This week the ERC community came together for our Advocacy lesson for R U OK? Week and Anti-Bullying Month, our students proved that kindness is something we build together, literally.
Coming together across all year groups, students collaborated on a hands-on project to construct a symbolic “Bridge of Connection.” Each paddle-pop stick and handwritten message represented a core value of our school community: inclusion, active listening, standing up against bullying and checking in on your mates.
By designing and assembling the bridge side-by-side, students gained a practical understanding of what it means to support one another. They learned that asking a simple “R U OK?” or reaching out to someone left out can span any gap between us. The finished bridge now stands proudly in our College, serving as a daily visual reminder that no one walks alone at our school.
Our students also had the privilege of hosting Talk2MeBro, a local organisation dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention, for a powerful session centered on the true meaning of mateship. Through candid discussions and real-life stories, the team taught our students how to break down emotional barriers, check in on their friends, and create a safe environment where it is okay to speak up. We are Stronger Together!

Year 7 News
On Monday, 24th August, Year 7 had the exciting opportunity to participate in their first ever Social Day with the students from St Mary’s College. The day was filled with engaging activities designed to foster teamwork, camaraderie, and friendly competition.
The day featured a one hour dance session facilitated by StreetBeatz, which helped students break the ice and step out of their comfort zones, while sporting events provided an opportunity to showcase athletic skill and sportsmanship. Additionally, the trivia competition tested students’ knowledge , notably executed by our College Stage Band for one round of ‘Guess that Tune’. These activities not only encouraged teamwork but also created a fun and inclusive atmosphere where students could connect and engage with one another.
Beyond the fun and challenges, Social Day provided a special opportunity for students to build new friendships and rekindle old ones from primary school. The connections made during the day continued into the evening, as the boys attended a social disco at St Mary’s College. The disco allowed students to further strengthen these friendships, ensuring that the memories made will last well beyond the day itself.
The Year 7 boys are to be commended for their exemplary conduct throughout both parts of the event. Their respect, sportsmanship, and welcoming spirit towards the St Mary’s visitors were commended by staff from both schools. In alignment with our pastoral theme for the year; “The Seed will Grow – growing right relationships”, the students demonstrated the importance of kindness, inclusivity, and personal growth. This theme reflects our commitment to fostering meaningful connections and nurturing positive personal development within our school community.
Congratulations and thank you to all involved in making Social Day such a resounding success!
Earlier this term we also had the pleasure of recognising both academic and pastoral success through awarding both our College Commendation and Principal’s Awards. This celebrated the exceptional achievements and personal growth of our Year 7 students. The Commendation Awards highlighted those who have excelled all round, demonstrating outstanding effort and achievement across various subjects. Meanwhile, the Principal’s Awards honored students who have shown exemplary character, leadership, and continued success, contributing positively to our school community. These awards not only celebrate individual accomplishments but also inspire all students to strive for excellence and embody what it means to be an Edmund Rice man.
We would like to extend a warm congratulations to the large number of students who received Commendation Awards, with a special mention to the following boys who have been recognized with Principal’s Awards for their outstanding contributions and character: Noah Dawson; Lennox Ferns; Sneh Haripara; Samson Ingham; Koa Lulia; Jaxon Rodrigues; Hugo Segrave.

Rugby League Opens NSWCCC Cup
On Tuesday, 25 August, our Opens Rugby League squad braved an early morning start, travelling to Holy Cross College, Ryde, to compete in the NSWCCC Cup. Beyond the silverware on offer, the tournament carried deep significance as our Year 12 players stepped onto the field to wear the Edmund Rice College jersey for the very last time.
The team hit the ground running in their opening match against Newman Technical College. Displaying sharp execution in attack and disciplined line speed in defense, the boys shut out their opponents in a convincing 15–0 victory with a nail in the coffin field goal from Fletcher Couchman. Game two brought a heavy physical challenge against Marcellin College Randwick. In an intense battle of attrition, our squad showed incredible strength, fighting out a tense 4–4 draw.
The final pool game against St John’s College Woodlawn was another razor-thin contest. ERC pushed until the final whistle in a demanding physical exchange, narrowly falling short by a missed conversion 6–4.
Tournament Results
- Game 1: ERC 15 def. Newman Technical College 0
- Game 2: ERC 4 draw Marcellin Randwick 4
- Game 3: St John’s College Woodlawn 6 def. ERC 4
- Plate Final: Parramatta Marist High 8 def. ERC 0
Qualifying for the Plate Final against Parramatta Marist High, the boys had one more thing to play for. A string of injuries during the pool stages meant we entered the final with zero bench players. With no interchange options to refresh tired legs, the 13 boys on the field relied entirely on heart and determination. Though Parramatta Marist eventually claimed an 8–0 win.
Standout individual performances across the day came from Oskar Vegneris, Max Van Loo, Gus Tunbridge, Fletcher Couchman, and Jeremy Packer, all of whom led from the front with their relentless work ethic and toughness.
Congratulations to all the players for their outstanding sportsmanship and effort. Thank you to Mr Toohey and Mr Sullivan for coaching the boys all year. Lastly, a special tribute goes to our graduating Year 12 boys, thank you for your years of dedication to ERC sport and for leaving everything on the field in your final run out.
