Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Last Friday, our College community, led by Bishop Brian Mascord, came together to celebrate and bid farewell to the Graduating Class of 2026. In a year defined by 100 years of tradition, faith, and community, this cohort’s farewell was a deeply moving reflection on their time at the College.

Year 12 Hospitality Students Showcase Culinary Excellence at Annual Parent Afternoon Tea

The scent of freshly baked treats and espresso coffee recently filled the air as our Year 12 Hospitality students hosted their highly anticipated Parent Afternoon Tea. Serving as one of their final practical competency service periods, the event was a resounding success, bringing together proud parents, guardians, and school Executive staff for an unforgettable culinary experience.

Under the guidance and mentorship of their trainers, Mr Donovan Pierro, Mrs Sheree McDonell, and Mrs Rebecca Bailey, with a special mention to Mrs Sharon McFarlane, the boys truly put on a phenomenal show. From months of rigorous classroom training to high-pressure kitchen prep, the students demonstrated exceptional professionalism, teamwork, and precision.

The afternoon highlighted both front-of-house service and back-of-house kitchen mastery. Guests were treated to an array of handcrafted sweet and savoury dishes, including freshly made caramel tartlets, arancini balls, and spinach & ricotta triangles featuring house-made ricotta, all prepared and served entirely by the students. Beyond meeting their final course requirements, the boys delivered a polished, cocktail-style service that showcased just how much their skills have matured throughout the year.

The event was a wonderful opportunity for parents to sit back, relax, and savor the direct results of their sons’ hard work, while Executive staff commended the cohort for their hospitality, work ethic, and attention to detail.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Hospitality cohort on executing such a seamless and memorable event, and a sincere thank you to Mr Pierro, Mrs McDonell, Mrs Bailey and Mrs McFarlane for their tireless dedication in preparing the boys for success both in the classroom and beyond.

Black Death Evidence Boards on Eyam

In history this term, the Year 8 boys were given the task of creating an Evidence Board on the devastating impact the Black Death had on the small English town of Eyam. Students used a variety of techniques to complete this task in order to determine the human cost at this time in history. This task taught us the sacrifice the town made when they chose to quarantine in order to stop the plague spreading towards the northern parts of England. It also gave the boys valuable insight to the life and lack of medical knowledge people had during this time, and insight into individuals and families and their loss. This was a great hands on task.

Creative Arts Showcase

Our Annual Visual Arts and Music Showcase was a fantastic celebration of student talent, creativity, and hard work across all year levels. The Visual Arts Exhibition opened on September 3rd in Waruga House with the Years 7–12 Visual Arts Exhibition. The spotlight shone on our Year 12 HSC Bodies of Work, alongside impressive displays from Years 7–11, including Year 11 Bundanon Art Camp paintings and drawings, Year 10 paintings, drawings and ceramic pieces based on the Steelworks, Years 9–10 photography, Year 8 Pop Art skate decks, hybrid creature drawings and ceramic sculptures, and Year 7 Mambo-style drawings and Australian themed ceramic cars. It was wonderful to witness the excitement and pride the students demonstrated when sharing their achievements with their families, teachers and peers.

The Showcase continued Monday, September 14th, with our Year 12 HSC Music students performing their final HSC examination pieces. Joined by supporting musicians from Years 8 through 11, the HSC students played with outstanding confidence and poise before an audience of family, staff and peers. Their performances reflected months of dedication and practice.

I would like to thank the Creative Arts staff, Mr Greg Haybittle, Mr Mario Bonaccorso, Mr Antonio Lenzo, Mrs Leen Rampe, Mr Simon Tognetti and Mr Kyden Sunarya for their continued dedication to supporting our students pursue their love of Creative Arts.

Identity

Legacy Badge Sellers

Legacy is a prominent Australian charity which is committed to helping the families of veterans who gave either their lives or their health in the course of serving their country by offering them necessary financial, social and emotional assistance.

Last Wednesday, six students from Year 9 at Edmund Rice College took the initiative to help maintain this National tradition by taking part in the Legacy Badge appeal at the Wollongong Mall. The three pairs of students, sold badges and interacted warmly with members of the local community. It was a very successful day which raised significant funds for a most worthwhile cause, demonstrating clearly the community spirit of our boys just before they went back to school to change into their sport uniforms for the afternoon.

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the dedicated Year 9 volunteers for such an admirable representation of ERC and for making a real difference to military families in need.

Pastoral Care

Rites of Passage, Growth, and Strong Foundations

As we come to the end of Term 3—our designated Wellbeing Term at Edmund Rice College—our pastoral focus continues to be anchored in positive psychology and our My Strengths framework. We know that young men thrive when they are guided through key rites of passage, given opportunities to lead, and supported in building habits of gratitude, reflection, and community.

This week has been a landmark week across all stages of the College, characterised by major milestones, academic focus, and student leadership.

Celebrating the Class of 2026: Year 12 Graduation & Mass

A defining highlight of our school year takes place this week with the Year 12 Graduation and Mass. Graduation represents the culmination of a thirteen-year educational journey. As our Year 12 young men prepare to walk out the gates as Edmund Rice graduates, we celebrate not only their academic and co-curricular achievements, but the growth of their character. Grounded in our Edmund Rice tradition, these young men leave us equipped with strong personal values, deep brotherhood, and the confidence to use their unique strengths to make a positive impact on the world. We extend our deepest congratulations and blessings to our Year 12 students and their families.

Academic Focus: Year 11 Preliminary Examinations

While Year 12 celebrated their graduation, our Year 11 cohort was completing their Preliminary HSC Examinations in the Br Pelin Hall. Completing these formal examinations is a critical milestone as Stage 6 students transition into their final HSC year. In line with positive psychology, we encourage our Year 11 boys to view this exam block not merely as an evaluation, but as a vital feedback loop. Exercising character strengths such as Perseverance, Focus, and Self-Regulation during this period lays the exact groundwork needed for senior success next term.

Stage 4 Growth: Gratitude and Community

Our Stage 4 students have also been deeply engaged in meaningful pastoral activities this week. Year 7 students participated in dedicated pastoral lessons focusing on Gratitude. Practicing intentional gratitude is one of the most effective, evidence-based positive psychology habits for boosting mental wellbeing, helping our youngest students recognise the positive influences and support systems around them. Our Year 8 cohort gathered in the Chapel for their Year 8 Mass, celebrating their shared faith and unity. Alongside this spiritual reflection, Year 8 engaged in an Anti-Bullying lesson, reinforcing our collective commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for every student.

Looking Ahead: Stage 5 Engagement & Peer Support

Years 8 & 9 Co-Curricular & Sport Selection: Students in Years 8 and 9 have been finalising their sport choices and co-curricular pathways for next year. Encouraging active participation and physical wellbeing helps our Stage 5 students build connections, resilience, and personal health. Our Year 10 students took an exciting step toward senior leadership this week with their Peer Support Information Session. As they prepare to step into mentorship roles for our incoming Year 7 students next year, this program empowers our Stage 5 boys to recognise their capacity for service, empathy, and positive peer influence.

We thank all our families, staff, and community members for their ongoing partnership as we support our young men through every step of their school journey.

Strength Focus of the Fortnight: “Gratitude & Perspective”

  • The Habit: At the end of each day this week, write down or share around the dinner table three specific things that went well and the personal strength you used to achieve them.
  • The Why: In positive psychology, practicing regular gratitude rewires the brain to focus on growth and capability, building long-term emotional resilience during busy transition periods.

Director of Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

NSWCCC Football Winners - Back to Back

A massive congratulations to our Opens Football Team on defending their title and winning the NSWCCC Opens Football Championship at Valentine Sports Park!

Under the guidance of coaches Mr Belsito and Mr Crapis, the boys put on an outstanding performance. They dominated their semi-final with a resounding 6-0 victory over St Matthew’s Mudgee, before securing the championship in a thrilling 4-3 win against De La Salle Revesby in the final.

What an amazing achievement by the entire squad, and a truly fantastic way for our outgoing Year 12 students to celebrate the end of their ERC footballing journey. We are incredibly proud of your dedication and teamwork!

Yr7/8 Oztag Champion of Champions - 2nd in State

On the 1st and 2nd of September, the Edmund Rice College Year 7/8 Oztag team travelled to the Central Coast to represent the College at the prestigious Champion of Champions NSW Oztag Carnival. Facing very warm weather conditions across both days, the students played to an exceptionally high level, displaying remarkable skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament.

The team hit the ground running, showing great cohesion and constant encouragement for one another in every game. Competing in 6 round-robin matches, the boys dominated the field with clinical execution and relentless effort, winning all 6 games convincingly to finish ranked 1st in their pool.

Carrying their momentum into the finals series, the boys displayed fantastic composure and game management. They navigated through tough Quarter-Final and Semi-Final fixtures, securing well-deserved victories to book their place in the Grand Final.

In the Grand Final, Edmund Rice College went head-to-head against a strong Patrician Brothers Blacktown side. The match was an absolute classic, featuring high-intensity tag football that went back and forth for the entire duration. At the sound of the full-time hooter, the score was deadlocked at 3–3.

With the championship on the line, the game proceeded into extra-time drop-outs with only 5 players per team on the field. In an absolute nail-biter with maximum space and fatigue setting in after two long days, the boys fought until the very end, ultimately going down in a heart-stopping finish.

Beyond their impressive results, the boys represented Edmund Rice College to a high standard both on and off the field. Their respectful conduct towards opponents and referees, combined with their unwavering support for each other, was a true credit to the school.

Congratulations to all the players on an outstanding campaign gaining and being crowned 2nd in the State.

Year 7/8 Oztag Squad: Sean Manson (C), Harry Thomson, Pauliasi Lago, Cooper Roche, Quade Nelson, Zaine Beath, Harley Schulze, Jack Kauter, Riley Perry, Rome Monkley, Brody Norrie, Angus Thompson, Jack Calcraft, Aiden Dimitrievski. Coach: Kylie Timmins, Bus Driver: Kris Sjostedt

Mrs Timmins

U15s AFL

After incredible displays of skill and teamwork to win both the local gala day and the South Coast Final, the team advanced to the highly competitive ACT/Greater South Coast Final. The boys put up a fantastic fight against the region’s best, securing 2 wins and suffering just two narrow, single-digit losses to the eventual grand finalists.

We are incredibly proud of the high-quality footy you played and the outstanding sportsmanship you showed in representing the College. Well done, boys!

Mr Bourke

Lachlan Jones - Student Achievement

Year 7 student Lachlan Jones, recently represented Australia on the global stage at the UCI BMX World Championships.

Competing against the top riders on the planet in the competitive 13 Boys category, Lachlan put in a stellar performance to qualify through the knockout rounds all the way to the 1/8 Finals. Pushing hard in a stacked field, he secured a fantastic 7th-place finish in his final heat. This impressive result earns Lachlan an official World Championship ranking of 55th in the world—an extraordinary milestone for a young athlete!

Adding to his international success, Lachlan was also recently named the Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS) BMX Athlete of the Year. This prestigious award recognises his dedicated work ethic, sportsmanship, and outstanding growth throughout the season.

Congratulations Lachlan on these outstanding achievements—we can’t wait to see where his bike takes him next!

Snowsports Success: State & National Championships!

We extend a massive congratulations to Year 11 students Bowen Sharrock and Nate Warren for their outstanding performances at the State Inter-schools Snow Championships. Both boys demonstrated incredible skill on the slopes, earning themselves qualification for the National Championships—Bowen in the Snowboard GS and Nate in the Slopestyle Ski.

Battling harsh, unpredictable weather at Nationals, Nate put on a phenomenal display to take out 4th place in the country for Slopestyle Ski. Regrettably, due to the extreme weather conditions, Bowen’s Snowboard Cross event was cancelled, preventing him from competing on the national stage.

Congratulations to Bowen and Nate on an amazing season, and here’s hoping for clearer skies and better conditions in 2027!

UOW breakfast with leaders featuring former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, AM (Member of the Order of Australia)

On Tuesday eight of our potential Year 9 leaders participated in a UOW hosted breakfast with leaders featuring Global Ambassador Adam Gilchrist. Students engaged in interactive leadership sessions and gained valuable insights into:

  • Learn key leadership lessons from sports: Adam Gilchrist shared experiences from his international cricket career, illustrating how lessons from elite sports directly transfer to personal and professional leadership.
  • Understand the power of mindset & accountability: He highlighted stories from team tours, such as Steve Waugh introducing the motto “Attitudes are infectious. Is yours worth catching?” to show how taking ownership and eliminating excuses shifts outcomes and how a positive mindset allows you to seize opportunities with confidence.
  • Engage in direct Q&A and networking: Students participated in open discussions, asked questions about navigating career detours and handling pressure. Our own Gwil Barnes asked a very good question about any regrets and missed opportunities. He said that he took every opportunity presented and as an 18-year-old went to England to further his career. His career blossomed as a result.
  • Explore authentic communication: They learned the value of staying humble, embracing mistake driven learning, and the importance of setting achievable goals and rewarding yourself.
  • Preparation: Adam stressed that you need to trust your preparation and effort, aspire to fulfill your dream and pursue what you love.

At the end of the presentation 6 lucky door prizes were drawn with the winner receiving a UOW bag packet with prizes including an autographed mini cricket bat. Again, our college was represented with distinction as Hugh Hogan’s name was drawn.

Sizzling Success: Father’s Day Breakfast Brings Our Community Together!

What a fantastic morning we had on Friday, 4th September! The sun broke through just in time as we welcomed more than 400 fathers, grandfathers, and father figures to the school grounds for our annual Father’s Day Breakfast.

The aroma of bacon and eggs drifted across the quad early in the morning, drawing a massive crowd toward the BBQ. Alongside the crowd-pleasing sausage sizzle, our dedicated volunteer team kept the food flowing nonstop, ensuring everyone was served before the first bell. Seeing the school courtyard packed with families sharing a meal, chatting, and kicking off the weekend early was a wonderful reminder of the warmth of our school community.

Music, Energy, and Community Spirit

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere was our incredibly talented school band. They took to the stage early and played a robust, high-energy set that had everyone tapping their feet. Their performance provided the perfect backdrop for the morning, and it was clear our student musicians loved playing for such a large, enthusiastic audience of very proud dads.

Organising a hot breakfast for over 400 guests is no small task. A massive thank you goes to our P&F President, Charmaine McInerney and Vice President Melissa Docherty, whose outstanding leadership and tireless planning made the entire event run like clockwork. From early-morning setup under the stars to serving food with a smile, Charmaine and the entire P&F volunteer crew poured so much heart into making our dads feel truly valued.

Thank you to every dad and father figure who took the time out of their busy schedules to join us, as well as the school staff who assisted with setup and coordination. Your presence made the morning an absolute triumph, and we are already looking forward to our next P&F community gathering!
