Year 9 Visual Arts Excursion

Year 9 Visual Arts students had a great opportunity to visit Wollongong Steelworks last Wednesday the 26th of October. The excursion to the BlueScope Steel Plant involved seeing the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Plant, Slab Caster, Hot Strip Mill or Plate Mill and visiting an area of Port Kembla Inner Harbour for drawing. This unit of work enhanced the students’ study of Modernism and ideas of industrial design in Critical and Historical Studies. The experience also supported their artmaking where the boys drew preliminary urban landscape sketches for their portfolio of works. The students are studying pencil and charcoal drawing and assemblage techniques to create sculptures under the theme ‘Constructed Worlds’.
