16s State Futsal Summary
On Thursday the 14th September the Under 16’s Edmund Rice Futsal team travelled to the Hawkesbury PCYC for the NSW State Futsal Championships. This team filled with players from the Under 16s CCC outdoor squad were coming off a high after being crowned NSWCCC Championships only just one week earlier. Futsal however, a sport not many play on the weekend posed a challenge for this group of young men.
Sure enough, the persistence and character amongst this group was like no other. Game one against Katoomba High School at 8:00am after traveling for almost two hours ended in a close 4-3 win thanks to a last second winner from Willem Robaard. The second round fixture against Homebush Boys High School posed more of a challenge for the squad when after going 1-0 down only just 5 minutes into the game the boys were challenged to again make a comeback. With 2 minutes left on the clock, skipper Oliver Morgan found the bottom left hand corner leaving the game at a final score of 1-1.
After having over a two hour break, round 3 fixture against William Clarke College resulted in a forfeit which left the Edmund Rice team grateful as they were able to save their legs for the last fixture against Ryde Secondary College. This game was imperative for the ERC boys as they needed to win to progress out of the group stage. With a final score of 5-1 the boys progressed into the Quarterfinals of the tournament where they faced Bossley Park High School. Unfortunately, this fixture finished 4-1 in favour of Bossley Park which put an end to the Edmund Rice boys fantastic tournament.
Congratulations to this group of young men who continually display great sportsmanship and charisma on and off the field. We look forward to seeing these boys represent the College in the years to come.
