Principal's Message

Dear parents and carers,

Thank you to the many fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who were able to join us last week for the Annual Parents and Friends Father’s Day Breakfast. It was a fantastic atmosphere and a wonderful way to celebrate as a community. The College thanks the dedicated Parents and Friends committee for orchestrating yet another welcoming event.

While honouring those fathers and father figures, both living and deceased, we offer our prayers of thanksgiving to St Joseph, the father of the Holy Family, as they continue to guide and inspire us.

***

As we approach next week’s Year 12 Graduation celebrations, I commend Year 12 for how they continue to apply themselves during each day and each remaining lesson. Students are currently using the feedback from their results of the recent HSC Trial examinations to maximise their learning in the remaining weeks leading to their HSC examinations next Term. The consistent and steady example of our senior students to the younger boys in our College is a testament to their commitment to striving for excellence across all subject areas. In this way, I would like to congratulate those students who have recently completed their HSC major work projects and final performances. The outstanding quality of the recent Visual Arts and Music HSC Exhibition was an authentic example of a liberating education in action. Thank you to every member of the Creative and Performing Arts Team, under the guidance of Ms Mary Costello, for your hard work and generosity in holding this community event.

***

The recent ‘pinning of the badges’ at last week’s whole-school assembly was a meaningful symbol of the invaluable partnership between parents and schools in educating our young people. Throughout the school year, many opportunities allow ERC parents and carers to engage in person as active members of our College community. First-time visitors to the College often comment on the respectful manner in which ERC students generally conduct themselves.

It is always worth reminding ourselves of the importance of high-quality supportive relationships between parents and teachers and how this is a key to the success of an individual student’s academic engagement across a school year.

Best wishes,

Stephen Gough

Deputy Principal's Message

YEAR 12 – GRADUATION & STUVAC

Completing thirteen years of schooling is a wonderful feat and one which must be recognised and indeed celebrated. To the Year 12 students, for your final week, take time to reflect on your achievements thanking your teachers but most importantly your attention should especially be focussed on your parents for their investment in you. Not only in your education but for their support in providing the best opportunity available for you to develop your talents, academically shine and allow you to be ever present in a learning environment which is full of support.

Preparing for the completion of your HSC examinations, rounds off this journey so preparing and planning is essential in the coming weeks. Some overall guidelines, advice and study tips may help you make the most of stuvac include: Creating a Study Schedule, Setting Clear Goals, Using Effective Study Techniques, Staying Organised, Taking Breaks, Staying Healthy, Seeking Assistance, Using Technology Wisely (limiting distractions), Staying Positive and Managing Stress, Review and Revise, Simulate Exam Conditions, Stay Consistent, Stay Motivated and most importantly Stay Informed.

Remember that stuvac is a valuable opportunity to identify areas of improvement and refine your examination techniques before the final exam. Stay committed, remain focussed and adopt a positive growth mindset, should only assist you in your overall performance. Time waits for no one, it will pass quickly. Believing in your abilities, staying on track and maybe sacrificing some social elements now, may pay dividends and be beneficial down the track.

College Deputy Principal

Identity

From the Director of Identity

Season of Creation

As part of the whole Christian church, as spring unfolds in the southern hemisphere and autumn in the northern hemisphere, we are drawn into the Season of Creation. “Let Justice and Peace Flow” is the theme of this year’s ecumenical Season of Creation, inspired by the words of the prophet Amos: “Let justice flow on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (5:24). Pope Francis writes:

“The evocative image used by Amos speaks to us of what God desires. God wants justice to reign; it is as essential to our life as God’s children made in his likeness as water is essential for our physical survival. This justice must flow forth wherever it is needed, neither remaining hidden deep beneath the ground nor vanishing like water that evaporates before it can bring sustenance. God wants everyone to strive to be just in every situation, to live according to his laws and thus to enable life to flourish. When we “seek first the kingdom of God” (Mt 6:33), maintaining a right relationship with God, humanity and nature, then justice and peace can flow like a never-failing stream of pure water, nourishing humanity and all creatures.”

Perhaps we can all consider how we are caring for God’s earth and the most vulnerable who are at the mercy of the acceleration of climate change. The challenge: what is one thing that you can do to be more sustainable in your own life?

Year 12 – NSW Students Online

Year 12 Students have been reminded to ensure they have activated their access to their Students Online Account. This is accessed via studentsonline.nesa.edu.au.

This website is an important channel of communication between you son and NESA. It provides information and advice to help you son throughout his HSC study, and has a personal account area for each student. Please note your son’s account will close on 30 June, 2024.

Parents are advised to please check with your son has activated his Students Online account. If your son has not already used Students Online to see his Years 10 and 11 grades, he has been advised to follow the instructions after clicking the ‘activate your account now’ link. If there is an error in activating your son’s account, he may see or email me to obtain assistance at jbell@erc.nsw.edu.au

Once this account has been activated, your son will see his personal study details such as his personal HSC exam timetable, assessment ranks, Years 10 and 11 grades, and HSC results. He will need to be able to do this to download an electronic copy & print off his HSC documents so that he will have access to these when required in the future.

I wish Year 12 all the very best with their final preparations for the Higher School Certificate Examinations.

Year 11 Preliminary Examinations

Year 11 Preliminary Examinations will continue next week and conclude on Friday, 15th September. All Year 11 students are expected to attend the Year 12 Graduation Mass in period 3 on Friday, 15th September.

Pastoral Care

From the Director of Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

R U OK is annual campaign born from the lived experience of Gavin Larkin, whose father died by suicide. Gavin was a passionate champion for the fact that a conversation could change a life. He advocated for building both the confidence and skills to equip people with the ability to have a genuine conversation beginning with asking R U OK?
R U OK undertook research to understand what a meaningful R U OK? conversation looks like for Australians in 2023, identifying three key elements:

  • Trust: Australians need to know the person they speak to is someone they trust, and, for many, someone they are close to.
  • Authenticity: Australians want to know the person asking them genuinely wants to hear the answer.
  • Environment: Australians prefer to have these conversations in a private space with enough time to share what they want to say.

By taking the time for an R U OK? conversation and genuinely listening with an open mind, we can all help the people in our community feel supported and connected.
Next week will have a four day focus on the importance of this conversation, with a particular focus on how to have these conversations during our Pastoral Lessons on Tuesday. Throughout the week we will have a range of lunchtime activities that provide opportunities for connection, which is the foundation of all good conversations. These activities will include;

  • Monday Lunchtime Yoga in the ERC
  • Tuesday Recess Biscuit decorating in the Senior Cola
  • Wednesday Wellbeing Trivia in the Narandha Learning Centre (Library)
  • Thursday – Staff and students are asked to wear something yellow to mark the day and make a Gold coin donation for the R U OK charity. Our hope is to replicate the R U OK Day, to raise both awareness as well as funds to support the organisation.

I am thrilled to announce the Year 10’s Outdoor Concert in the Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) on Wednesday, September 20th during Recess 2. The air is buzzing with excitement as our talented students gear up to showcase their musical prowess in a stunning afternoon of performances.

Some Valuable Upcoming Webinars

Many young people struggle to develop and sustain a positive body image and as recently as this week there has been a resurgence of food-related shaming and weight-related bullying in adolescence, in the news in recent weeks. Sadly, some teenage boys feel pressure to be physically ‘tough’ and ‘strong’. Poor body image may lead to lower self-esteem, lower life satisfaction and a lack of confidence. Body image issues can also lead to other mental health problems including anxiety and depression.
This week was body image and eating disorder awareness week. The Butterfly foundation provides support for those impacted by poor body image and eating disorders. In the coming weeks they are offering two very valuable parenting webinars:

Tuesday September 12 – Supporting Teens to Eat Well in a Confused World.

Tuesday October 17 – Body Confident Children and Teens

Sextortion Webinar

The Australian Federal Police- led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) will deliver two webinars to increase whole school community awareness of the trends, issues and response to online child sexual exploitation.

Register here now: Webinar- Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE)

With the prevalence of children and young people accessing the internet, online safety is becoming an increasing concern around the world. The increase in young people accessing the internet has seen a corresponding upward trend in cases of online child sexual exploitation. Sextortion is an example of online child sexual exploitation or abuse which involves offenders, who often pretend to be another young person, coercing victims into sending them sexual images or videos of themselves online.
Kids helpline data and data from the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) indicate a 60 per cent increase in reports of sexual extortion (sextortion) of young Australians in 2022 and 2023. The data indicates boys aged 14-17 are a primary target as victims of sexual extortion. The AFP are offering a valuable parent webinar to assist parents and caregivers in understanding this complex and challenging issue.

Webinar: Parents, caregivers and members of school communities

  • When: Thursday 14 September 5:30-6:30pm
  • Register via the Microsoft form above. The zoom link to the event will be sent to those who register the week prior to the event.
  • Registrations close Monday 11 September.
  • This webinar will be presented by Commander ACCCE and Human Exploitation, Helen Schneider

This webinar will address:

  • The role of the ACCCE
  • Current and emerging trends for young people, e.g. financial sextortion, offender methodologies, what the data tells us
  • The response of the ACCCE to these trends, including resources for students and parents, what happens when a report is made
  • What do parents and carers need to know?
  • How to talk to your child about potential challenges and how to mitigate these
  • Offender methodologies, tactics and red flags
  • What can parents and carers do if a child in their care is a victim?
  • Where and how to report
  • Support services and resources
  • How to respond to your child if they are a victim
  • Parent/carer specific resources and further reading.

If any change has occurred/occurs in your family – separation, divorce, serious illness, the College should be notified as soon as possible. The College seeks to be supportive of families in such circumstances and such events always have a bearing on a child’s education. Likewise, a change of address, email or phone number (work, home or mobile) or emergency contact should be advised immediately.

If your son suffers from a medical condition it is vital that you inform the office of his condition and what treatment is required in an emergency. An emergency management plan must be developed for any students with serious conditions.
