Dear Parents and Carers,
As we continue through this school year, the past fortnight has caused me to reflect on the impact and core values of teamwork.
Teamwork is more than just collaboration—it is what drives success in every part of our College. From the College Advisory Council, Leadership Team, Pastoral Care Teams, Identity Team, individual faculties, right through to the teams who look after the maintenance of the College grounds – each playing their part. Equally important is the vital partnership and teamwork between home and school – symbolised by the 600 attendees at yesterday’s Father’s Day Breakfast together with the generosity of both the parents and friends and the many staff volunteers.
Just last night, throughout the HSC Visual Arts and Industrial Technology Showcase, both the Creative and Performing Arts and TAS teachers and students proudly presented the benefits of working together in producing some outstanding student projects and bodies of work. A credit to all involved!
The ERC Opens Schoolboys Rugby League team were recently crowned NSW Country Champions after a brilliant performance in the final at Mudgee. This was a historic first for the College.
On top of this was the success of the U/14 Indoor Soccer team, who were crowned NSW State Futsal Champions with an amazing 5-2 victory. These achievements marked milestones for the College. Their achievements weren’t just about talent—they were about trust and shared effort. Their teamwork both on and off the field reflects the spirit of our College, and we are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.
Of course, teamwork also means developing the next generation of leaders. I am therefore very pleased to announce our Student Leadership Team for 2025-2026 (pictured below). In congratulating these outstanding young men who have accepted the challenge of leadership, it is worth noting that the high quality of any team selection is often characteristic of those, who with graciousness, were not selected.
As we approach the Year 12 Graduation events, I am encouraged by the collective spirit of our Year 12 students as they continue to work hard in their respective academic teams in supporting one another for the upcoming HSC exams.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and best wishes to all the dads, grandfathers, and father-figures for a wonderful Father’s Day celebration this weekend.

Timor Leste Immersion Reflection
During Assembly this week, the Timor Immersion Group presented our final reflection. Nate Jennet, Thomas O’Neill, Declan Whitaker, Luca Tortorici, Liam Hall, Ashton Galvin, Koen Minett, Blake O’Neill, Christian Yeo and Nicholas Aivaliotis were outstanding ambassadors of the College and showed us what it means to live out our touchstones.
This group of good young men shared what they had learned, how they had grown and how we should all be very grateful for what we have. They have been inspired to support Timor and especially Railaco Craic, the community where we stayed in the homes of the people. Look out for opportunities to get on board and help us to make a greater impact.

Ethics Olympiad
One of the Enrichment activities that you can be involved in is the Ethics Olympiad. It involves thinking about the most ethical approach to dealing with tricky situations; essentially, finding out what’s right and wrong in a grey area. This year, our Intermediate team participated in the International Final back in February, achieving a Commendation. Then, they moved into the Senior Competition and won the silver medal in NSW, earning them the right to represent at the Senior International Finals this Term. They presented cases on voluntary assisted dying, eating dog meat, banning tobacco for the next generation, and the censorship of literature for modern accessibility.
It is a thrilling exercise to build cases with teams from around the world. We are looking forward to mentoring our next Intermediate team of students in Years 8 and 9. If you are interested in getting involved, please see Ms Shumack or Mrs Hurley as preparation will begin next week.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award
At the College currently we have over 60 students working towards their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and one of our students, Nathan Bitz has completed the requirements.
While we offer the camps here at school the other aspects of the program include: Physical Recreation: Nathan developed his swimming proficiency; Skill: Nathan developed his skill in metal work that he had learned at school and continued in his own time; Service: Completed his service through his local surf life saving club.
Congratulations to Nathan on showing perseverance and leadership in completing his Silver program.

Year 12 Reflection Day
Last week, Year 12 marked a significant milestone as they approach Graduation with their final Reflection Day. This day offered them the chance to pause, reflect on their journey, and consider the path ahead as they near the end of their time at the College. It was a day dedicated not only to celebrating achievements but also to setting intentions for the future and finding clarity about the next chapter.
The day began with a cohort liturgy, bringing students together in a moment of tranquility and focus. This was followed by an engaging presentation from Former College Vice Captain Jack Brown. Jack’s organisation Talk2MeBro, promotes open conversations and emotional well-being in young men. His words strongly resonated with the group, encouraging them to be mindful of their mental health and reminding them of the importance of seeking support as they step into life beyond school.
Students then took part in a series of workshops designed to build resilience, connection, and self-awareness. A highlight was the African drumming session, which underscored the power of unity and teamwork. The shared rhythms created a sense of harmony, reinforcing the value of working together—a skill that will be invaluable in adulthood.
Another session, also led by Talk2MeBro, focused on mindfulness practices, breathing strategies, and the importance of maintaining strong connections outside of school. Students were encouraged to adopt habits that support long-term mental well-being and even had the chance to test themselves in ice baths while practicing mindful breathing techniques.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was the mentor talks, where alumni returned to share their own experiences of Year 12 and life after school. Their stories and practical advice reassured the current cohort, offering both inspiration and realistic guidance as students prepare for their final exams.
The program concluded with sporting activities, giving students the opportunity to relax, connect, and strengthen bonds with their peers. These activities reinforced the day’s themes of collaboration and community, leaving the cohort with a renewed sense of support and unity.
In the end, Reflection Day provided more than just a break from routine – it was a meaningful experience that allowed Year 12 students to reflect on their journey, connect with one another, and prepare themselves mentally and emotionally for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Legacy Luncheon: Friday 29th August 2025
Overall, the day was an outstanding success, offering both enjoyment and valuable learning opportunities for us as visitors and volunteers. We began with a short training session before having the privilege of meeting Dean Boxall, the renowned Olympic swimming coach, who shared his experiences and insights into high-performance sport.
From there, we assisted with welcoming and directing guests of the Luncheon into the event hall, ensuring everything was ready for a prompt 12 o’clock start. Once seated, we had the opportunity to enjoy our entrees while listening to the opening speeches, which introduced us to the work of Legacy. This provided us with a deeper understanding of the organisation’s mission to support the families of veterans, as well as practical ways we can contribute to its cause in our own lives.
Our next responsibility was selling raffle tickets. Working in pairs, we approached each table to encourage guests to support the fundraiser. This task was a great success, with tickets selling out completely and raising thousands of dollars for Legacy. After carefully counting and folding the tickets, we returned to listen to Dean Boxall’s keynote address.
Dean’s speech was particularly inspiring, as he shared a number of important life lessons. He emphasised the importance of consistency over perfection, the power of mental strength, determination, and motivation, and the value of viewing challenges not as setbacks, but as opportunities to grow. He also encouraged us to make the most of every opportunity, maximising our chances of success by acting with intent and perseverance.
The day concluded with the raffle draw and an auction of donated items, which brought the event to a lively and rewarding close. Overall, the experience was both motivating and meaningful, leaving us with not only a sense of contribution but also a range of lessons to apply in our own lives.

Celebrating Success & Community
This week’s assembly was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our students. We celebrated Principal’s Award recipients, the newly appointed Year 12 leadership team for 2025/26, and countless academic and sporting achievements across all year levels. It’s in these moments of participation and success that our College community truly comes together, bonding through mutual support and a shared appreciation for excellence and sportsmanship.
Our thanks go to St. Mary’s for hosting a fun and well-attended Year 10 disco on Tuesday night. It was great to see so many students turn out and represent our College with such great conduct.

Focusing on Wellbeing: “Friend Better” and R U OK? Day
Next week, our College will continue to promote wellbeing in acknowledgement of R U OK? Day. This year’s campaign reminds us of the importance of asking, “Are you okay?” not just on a specific day, but any day.
During our pastoral lesson, we focused on the theme “Friend Better,” a powerful reminder of how to support our mates. Students will learn to recognize signs of stress in their friends and the importance of building strong connections. The lesson will highlight the four key steps of an R U OK? conversation:
- Ask R U OK?
- Listen
- Encourage Action
- Check in
We encourage the boys to not wait until a friend is struggling, but to ask early and often.
Throughout the week, our lunchtime activities will be designed to foster connection, inspire creativity, and provide simple ways to alleviate stress. It will be heartwarming to see our young men supporting one another—whether it is tackling challenging origami, coloring together, joining a wellness walk, practicing yoga, or coming together for prayer. The smiles will be contagious, and the atmosphere truly uplifting for everyone involved.
As a staff, we will also take time to remind ourselves of the importance of checking in with each other. By sharing conversations and setting a positive example, we can ensure we’re creating a supportive environment for both our students and ourselves.
Finally, a huge thank you to our Pastoral Team for leading all of the activities throughout the week and to all the staff who will wear yellow to mark the day.

Year 12 Reports and Student / Parent / Teacher Conferences
With Year 12 Reports published early next week, parents and carers are invited to attend the Year 12 Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences with your son on Thursday 11 September from 3:00 – 7:00pm in the College Narandha Learning Centre. This is a valuable opportunity for sharing insights into your son’s progress and achievements, and discussing recommendations for his final preparations for the upcoming HSC Exams.
Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony
We are also looking forward to celebrating the outstanding academic achievements of Year 12 students with the Presentation of Awards Ceremony following their Graduation Mass on Friday 19 September.
Preliminary Examinations
We wish Year 11 students all the very best for their upcoming Final Preliminary Examinations which commence on Monday 8 September. Students and Parents have been emailed instructions for the upcoming examination period, during which Year 11 students will have flexible attendance. They will only be required to be at school when they have an examination. Students may also wish to use the College Library to revise between examinations. All Year 11 students are expected to remain at school after their Examination on Friday 19 September to attend the Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony in the Edmund Rice Centre.
If your son is unwell or experiences a misadventure situation which prevent him attending an examination please phone the College Office before 7:45am on the day of the missed examination.
A reminder that a medical certificate or pharmaceutical letter or, in the case of misadventure, other independent expert evidence is required for all absences from assessment tasks or instances of impacted performance. Students must also inform the supervisor before the exam commences in the case of impacted performance.
The independent evidence must be attached to an Illness Misadventure Application Form and returned within 3 days of your son’s return to school.

The outdoor clothing industry, off-shore wind turbines, social media messing with our dopamine levels, the fees charged at TAFE. These are just some of the topics covered by Year 11 students who entered the Young Voices Writing competition. These national awards are hosted by the Australian Catholic Magazine in conjunction with the Australian Catholic University.
We are proud to announce that the 2025 winner in the Senior Category was Oliver Johnson. Oliver’s piece titled “The outdoor industry is poisoning you” discussed how Gortex, which is used in outdoor clothing, is harming our environment.

Our Assembly 'Grooves'
During a recent school assembly, a musical performance of “Funk Groove #5” added some creative flair to the already diverse program. The piece featured James Massarella from Year 11 on the piano, accompanied by a group of students from Years 8, 10, and 11, along with Mr. Haybittle and Mr. Bonaccorso. The students involved were Caelan, Jaxon, Emerson, Lachlan, and Matthew. The group delivered a cohesive and well-executed performance that was very well received by all staff and students. We extend our congratulations to all the students and staff who participated.
The boys certainly brought the ‘Funk’ to the assembly.

Year 11 HMS Morning Study Sessions
As the Year 11 Preliminary examinations approach, many of our Health and Movement Science (HMS) students have been demonstrating outstanding commitment and resilience in their preparation. Under the guidance of Mr Bradley Jardine and Mr Dene MacDonald, the students have been taking their studies to the next level by attending additional morning sessions each Thursday before school.
Starting bright and early at 7:00am, these one-hour sessions have focused on breaking down past paper questions, unpacking key syllabus concepts, and sharpening exam technique. The group has shown great determination, regularly sacrificing their own time to ensure they are thoroughly prepared for the challenges of the upcoming exams.
Both Mr Jardine and Mr MacDonald have played pivotal roles in supporting the students’ success, providing structured guidance, encouragement, and targeted feedback in each session. Their dedication has set a powerful example of the value of consistent effort and high expectations.
The College is incredibly proud of the effort and attitude shown by our Year 11 HMS students. Their willingness to go above and beyond reflects their maturity, teamwork, and genuine drive to achieve their best. We wish them all the very best for their upcoming Preliminary examinations.

Edmund Rice U14s Secure Spot in Cochrane Cup Final
The Edmund Rice U14s Rugby League team is one step closer to claiming the prestigious Cochrane Cup, advancing to the State Final after a series of thrilling victories this week.
On Tuesday, 2 September, the team travelled to Croome Road Sporting Complex in Albion Park for the Southern NSW Semi-Finals. They faced off against formidable opponents from Parramatta Marist, St John’s Dubbo, and Kildare College, Wagga Wagga.
While the team hoped for an easy path to the final, they were met with fierce competition. Each game was a brutal defensive battle, with the scores reflecting the hard-fought nature of every match.
- Game 1: Edmund Rice defeated Parramatta Marist 16-12.
- Game 2: Edmund Rice defeated St John’s Dubbo 16-0.
- Game 3: Edmund Rice defeated Kildare College Wagga Wagga 10-6.
Despite the final score, the match against St John’s Dubbo was arguably the toughest of the day, with parents and spectators praising the relentless, end-to-end action.
Several players stood out with exceptional performances. Captain Lewis McLeod was an unstoppable force, leading by example with his aggressive defense and powerful runs. Jacob Austin was equally dominant, while hooker Hunter Barrett demonstrated remarkable composure, delivering clinical passes to the playmakers exactly when needed.
The organizing duo of five-eighth Jake Schulze and halfback Wil Bryson executed the team’s game plan with precision. The back three also shone brightly throughout the day. Fullback Nate Ryan was a rock in defense and attacked with purpose, supported by winger Jackson Fraser, who not only scored multiple tries but also nailed kicks from the sideline. Winger Zac Stambulka secured a crucial victory with a remarkable catch in the final minutes of their last game.
Finally, lock forward Roman Young played every single minute of the day providing outstanding direction and a relentless defensive effort.
This was a fantastic team effort, and we wish the boys the best of luck in the State Final.

Bill Turner Cup - Final 8 match against Maribyrnong Sports College
After our 3:0 win against the strong Santa Sabina College from Sydney we were now off to Albury to face the best team in Victoria, Maribyrnong Sports College.
An early morning scare as Rocco the keeper does not seem to have recovered from illness. Not even the minus 1 degree temperature has put a spring into his step.
Coach JC decided on the following lineup:
- Goalkeeper: Ethan Mathie
- Defence: Rocco Scaglia, Stefen Anagnostopoulos, Christian Ugonotti, Lewis Andrew
- Midfield: Fabian Gaudiosi, Max Smith, Ethan Dzeparoski
- Forward: Callum Cajar, Alex Bradshaw-Wett, Aiden Rayner
- Reserves: Alexander Popovski, Edward Page, Travis Potter, Orlando Beer
Game on! Ethan M in goals for Rocco. After 10 seconds, 1 down! Failed to clear a harmless cross. Our guys hadn’t found their rhythm early and worse was to come as their only two raids into our half resulted in going 2 down. It will take some coming back from here.
Finally, we were finding our feet. Great lead up by Callum to Max goooooal! Great move! Back in it. But then tragedy. Their number 24 is all class. He waltzed through 4 defenders to make it 3:1. This was against the run of play. They were catching us on the counter attack. Our midfield was just starting to dominate. Number 24 was not the only quality player causing problems. They are cutting our defence to ribbons 4:1 at half time.
Coach JC had to reach deep into his bag of tactical tricks. Needed a quick goal after oranges. The Melbourne side are strong but we have had our chances.
Good keeping from Ethan kept the score respectable. Mid way through the second half Coach JC turned to his bench. Then there it was! Travis to Aiden who beat 3, crossed to Max who on the turn made no mistake 4:2!!! Travis, in particular, added a creative option in midfield. Alex P is giving their 24 no space. We are getting no favours from the officials! It had to happen. 4 free kicks in a row. Down 5:2. Then Alex P, attacking out wide, was chopped down. The free kick led to zilch. Then it was Aiden’s turn to get on the score sheet. Ethan magic to Alex P. Great cross to Aiden 5:3! We are in this up to our eye balls! Just need one more. We are all over them. Need to watch their counter. But to no avail. Game over. Unlucky boys. On behalf of our whole College, we salute your courage and commitment! You have played above and beyond. With heads held high.
They were quite a good side. Not unbeatable. They have been training twice + 2 gym sessions per week all through the cup run, as well as their Melbourne Victory and United commitments!

NSW All Schools Touch Football Selection – Congratulations Sam McMahon
In Week 6, the NSW All Schools Touch Football Championships were held at Hills Grammar, showcasing some of the best young talent in the state.
Sam McMahon represented Edmund Rice College as captain of the CCC U15 team, leading by example in the pivotal middle position. His outstanding leadership, skill, and consistency throughout the tournament earned him selection in the NSW All Schools Team, which will compete at the National Championships in Ballarat later this year.
