Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of another busy week, I am filled with great pride as I reflect on the remarkable achievements of our students across a diverse range of activities. Our school continues to shine as a Catholic learning community that offers students a broad spectrum of opportunities to discover their talents and develop their skills. In this last fortnight alone we can see a snapshot of outstanding accomplishments in music, sports, vocational education, leadership, and community service.
The talent within our school was on full display during our recent Music Night. The evening was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and music staff, Mr Bonaccorso and Mr Haybittle. The diverse range of musical genres showcased the versatility of our students, with the night being a resounding success. It was a proud moment to witness the depth of musical talent on show, reminding us of how important the arts are in enriching our school culture. In this way, I acknowledge Ms Mary Costello for her leadership of the Creative and Performing Arts.
The very next day I had the opportunity to travel and watch our Under 13 Rugby League team be crowned the NSW State Country Champions! This outstanding victory demonstrates the team’s commitment to each other and their sportsmanship to the opposition. Their journey to the championship was not easy, but their perseverance and teamwork have paid off in the best way possible. Congratulations to the boys and coaching staff: Mr Andrew Marsh, Mr. Nahni Meafou, and Mr. Barry Otley.
That same day our Year 12 students were fully engaged in their Spirituality Day, while later that night a group of senior students, together with a generous group of teachers participated in the Winter Sleepout. Our staff and students braved the cold to raise awareness and $3615 in charitable funds in demonstrating their compassion and willingness to make a difference in the world. Thank you to Mrs Judith Hurley for facilitating these enriching opportunities.
Finally, within the area of Vocational Education and Training (VET), Eamonn Lewis was last night recognised at the Catholic Education VET Awards for his outstanding achievements in Manufacturing and Engineering. In congratulating Eamonn on his achievement as VET Student of the Year in Manufacturing, I also acknowledge Mr Andrew Brooks for his leadership and commitment to the comprehensive nature of our VET program.
In a week that was bookended with the generosity of the Parents and Friends Association organising the well-attended Trivia Night and this morning’s Father’s Day Breakfast, our student achievements – across music, sports, vocational training, and community service – highlight the all-round supportive nature of the opportunities where our students are flourishing.
***
After a detailed selection process, it is my great pleasure to announce the ERC Senior Student Leadership Team for 2023/2024. I would like to extend my thanks to the many Year 11 students who demonstrated their commitment to the College by nominating themselves for these valued positions.
In congratulating our newly appointed student leaders, I am confident that they will be outstanding ambassadors for our College. Their leadership will continue to strengthen our school community as they uphold the values and traditions that define our College.
I look forward to seeing the contributions of this dynamic group of young leaders as they work collaboratively with students, staff, and the wider community to continue fostering a supportive and vibrant environment at our College.
Warm regards,
Dr Gough

This week’s Happy Families article “The Quest for Independence and Identity” By Dr Justin Coulson highlights some valuable considerations that help to support a young person’s journey of self discover, recognising their strengths, talents, interests and those things that spark joy in their lives.
Dr Coulson, encourages young people to have an opinion, to be critical thinkers, to be compassionate and appreciative of others perspectives. The article can be found here
This week’s Strengths spotlight is on Memory and Structured. These strengths are great strengths to have when preparing for exams and an assessment task. It is important to remember that each of us have these strengths, however, for some of us these are more highly developed and are ranked among our greatest strengths. For others these may be strengths that we wish to develop further.
Memory: Those with the Memory strength can recall details often missed by others. The details matter to people with the Memory strength, providing clarity and a commitment to the preservation of the truth.
Structured: Those with the Structured strength have a preference for things to be planned, ordered and systematic. The Structured strength is supported by routine, the avoidance of distractions and the commitment to following to sticking to a plan.
Families are encouraged to talk about the value of these strengths and the way in which they contribute to individual and collective success as well as ways in which these strengths can be enhanced.

Year 7 Social Day Brings Edmund Rice and St Mary’s Together
Last Thursday, 22nd August, Edmund Rice College had the pleasure of hosting Year 7 students from St Mary’s Star of the Sea for the annual Year 7 Social Day and Evening. This event, a much-anticipated tradition, provided an opportunity for students from both schools to interact, compete, and have fun in a lively and inclusive atmosphere.
Students were divided into small groups, each containing a mix of Edmund Rice boys and St Mary’s girls. These groups participated in a series of activities designed to foster teamwork and camaraderie. The friendly competition included rounds of Trivia, Sport, and a Hip Hop Dancing challenge. The diverse activities ensured that every student had a chance to shine and contribute to their group’s success.
The day culminated in a disco held at St Mary’s, which was extremely well attended by Edmund Rice and St Mary’s Year 7 students. The disco provided a perfect opportunity for everyone to unwind and enjoy themselves after a day full of activities.
A special highlight of the day was the Acknowledgement of Country dance, performed by Edmund Rice’s First Nation students. Their well-rehearsed and polished performance set a respectful and meaningful tone for the day, reminding everyone of the importance of honouring and acknowledging the land on which we gathered.
The Year 7 Social Day was a resounding success. A big thank you to everyone who participated, and to the staff from both Edmund Rice and St Mary’s for making the day possible.

Year 9 Ski Trip 2024
The Year 9 Ski Trip occurred between the 11th and 16th of August this year. Around 150 students participated in the experience, having an overwhelmingly positive time.
The three buses left at noon on Sunday for a long trip ahead. After two stopovers and having a quick dinner, they arrived, acquired gear, and became accustomed to the cabins and lodges. What followed was five days of skiing and snowboarding.
Every day students woke up at around 6 am, performed their morning routine and had breakfast. From there, a 40-minute bus ride to Thredbo for a morning lesson. These lessons were divided by snowboarding/skiing, and between skill levels. Lesser-experienced groups stayed around the Friday Flats area, honing their skills in snow sports. Other groups ventured around the resort in the company of their respective instructors, including the Merritts area, as well as notable runs such as the Traverse, High Noon, Dream Run, Supertrail, and more. Some even ventured down Black Diamond level runs on Mount Kosciuszko like The Bowl, Cannonball, and the Schuss, to name a few. This was a great way for students to step out of their comfort zones and try something new in the safety of a structured lesson, with their friends, encouraging each other along, one by one.
Following the lessons we were provided with lunch at a restaurant in Friday Flats. Afterwards, students created “Buddy Groups” for their multi-hour free time. Based on their skill in their selected snow sport, students were given one of three stickers to determine where in the resort they’d be allowed to go. A yellow sticker meant staying on Friday Flats, an orange sticker allowed you to take a chairlift up to Merritts (and the runs branching off from that), and a red sticker allowed students to venture on more advanced courses. By the end of the week, most people had progressed at least 1 or 2 stickers, demonstrating dramatic improvement in skill. This free time gave students a lot of autonomy and was when some of the most memorable moments occurred.
The free time was filled with adventure, loads of fun, and amazing opportunities to strengthen the bond between students and to build friendships. Back at the lodges, dinner was provided and students had hours of free time for evening routines and games.
On the last day, Friday, free time was shortened to allow time to return to the lodges, pack up, and drive back to Wollongong. Overall, the Year 9 Ski Trip was a wonderful experience for all involved. It provided the first opportunity for snow sports for many individuals and sharpened the skills of veteran skiers and snowboarders.
Sam Stevin and Daniel Morozov Year 9
- “My most memorable moment during the ski trip was skiing down Merritts for the first time.” Andre Abddulnour
- “My most memorable moments from the ski trip were definitely stepping into skis for the first time ever, along with going down some of the more difficult slopes that got my adrenaline pumping.”
Isaac Ayers - “My most memorable moment on Ski Trip was when I went down Mount Kosciuszko and got my red sticker.” Ben Ayoub
- “I was accompanied by my fellow brothers in excruciating gusts of wind when I finally achieved that bright red sticker and travelled up to Australia’s highest point and for a very short while I was the tallest lifted point in Australia. That was my favourite moment.” Ayden Celebi
- “The most memorable moment of the Ski Trip is when I hit the mounts and got a second of air time.” Matthieu Churchward
- “I landed my first jump with my friends and then went down Merritts, I think that because it was a big step up from Friday Flats” Adam Darwiche
- “My most memorable moment on Ski Trip was when me and my mates had stacked it down on Friday Flats“ Nate Skarapona
- “My most memorable moment on the Ski Trip was when our group was going up on the chair lift to do Friday Flats for the first time, when we were all really excited to go down our first proper slope. We all stood at the top together, talking ourselves up, saying “oh, it’s not that bad…” And then when we crashed all the way down.” Sam Stevin
- “buddy groups with my mates” Jett Micevski
- “When on the ski trip my most memorable moment was when I got my orange sticker and was able to go up to Merritts. Up at Merritts I had such a great time being able to do some more challenging runs with my friends. As well as this I really enjoyed the Ski lessons, with a great instructor I was able to learn many things such as parallel turning. Overall it was such a great experience.” Jasper Hasham
- “My most memorable moment on the Ski Trip was when Daniel M, Henry D, Jonathan B, and I went up to the highest point on the mountain to ring the bell. Although we got back late to the bus due to a miscommunication on the slopes, it was a very memorable and fulfilling moment/experience.” Nicholas Rebikov- Vincent
Year 9 Activity Days
Despite not being able to attend the ski trip we were given a great three days of fun activities led by Mr Jackson. We started off each day by going to a café on Wollongong beach. After we got loaded with sugar we headed back onto the bus for our activities the first day went go-karting and laser tag. Once there we got split up into three groups. My group started with laser tag which was a lot of fast-paced fun, after finishing that we got on the go-karts. Karting was a lot of fun even though it was a bit of a struggle to get a hang of it.
The second day started the same way with a café stop and after finishing with that we got straight on the bus for a 1 hour journey to the best activity tree tops. Treetops made everyone face some major fears especially since we had to clip ourselves onto each part.
Day three was much the same, just with bowling, go-karting, and laser tag again. Still an exciting day as everyone had got the handling of the karts and it was more enjoyable. The bowling was a fun final activity as it bought out the competitive side in everyone.
My most memorable moment on the Year 9 Activities Week was when…
- We did the tree tops walk and going to North Gong in the mornings. Cruz Mainwaring
- My experience was one to never forget. I was the most fun I’ve ever had in quite some time. Samuel Jovanovski
- When we went treetop climbing, we saw all the animals in the zoo next to the treetop climbing. Ethan Hall

Year 10: Advocacy Lesson / Family Feud
Edmund Rice College’s Year 10 students recently engaged in a dynamic and interactive Pastoral admin lesson centred around Advocacy, with a fun twist! Taking inspiration from the popular game show Family Feud, the session fostered a lively atmosphere while delving into the themes of Tolerance, Acceptance, and Respect.
Students were divided into several teams where they were challenged to work together to think critically about these values by responding to questions which challenged them to identify and understand societal views around ‘what makes a good friend’.
The interactive Family Feud format transformed the advocacy lesson into a lively and engaging experience, inspiring teamwork and encouraging students to confidently express their diverse opinions. This innovative approach, leveraging the excitement of a game show, ensured the themes of Tolerance, Acceptance, and Respect resonated deeply with every student
The experience allowed students to appreciate the power of their voices and the impact they can make in promoting a positive and welcoming environment for everyone. It also equipped them with essential skills for navigating complex social issues and advocating for a more tolerant and respectful College community.

ADVOCACY WEEK- YEAR 11/12 ACTIVITY
As part of Advocacy week, Year 11 and 12 students engaged in an extended pastoral lesson focused on bullying awareness, prevention and intervention. This initiative was aimed at shedding light on what can be seen as a challenging topic through a series of engaging activities in line with our College touchstone of inclusive community.
The activity commenced with students participating in a group trivia competition focused upon the statistics and effects of bullying in Australia. Through facilitation of a lively quiz outlining statistical data and real world implications of Bullying the “scene was set” for more in-depth discussions that followed.
Following the trivia, students participated in class discussions addressing key questions such as “Why do students bully?”, “the line between banter and bullying” and “the role of a bystander in bullying situations”. These discussions helped students understand the complexities of bullying behaviour and the impact it can have on individuals as well as a school community. Furthermore, these conversations also emphasised the important role of bystanders and how their actions or lack thereof can either stop or encourage bullying.
Following discussions, a video was presented created by Year 11 volunteer student leaders Timothy Armitage and Tristan Dale. This video featured responses from peers and teachers to focus questions around bullying. Having our College members take part in this video made the lesson more relevant and authentic to our students.
The extended pastoral period was successful aligning and supporting our College’s core touchstone value of inclusive community. The activity aimed not only to raise awareness but also to strengthen the College’s commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment.
Overall, the efforts made during Advocacy week have laid a solid foundation for continued conversations about respect and inclusivity. Lastly, I would like to thank the following students for volunteering their time and effort towards creating the material for the lesson to take place; Timothy Armitage, Tristan Dale, Henry Jones, Rafael Johns Murphy, Jack Teteris and Digby Woods.

World Day of Prayer for Creation September 1
Understanding the gospel and how it applies to each of us individually is one part of faith; a second aspect of faith is understanding how the gospel challenges us to be a ‘people of God’ (Exodus). As an Edmund Rice school, we understand this challenge through the lens of the touchstones and realise that we don’t just need to reflect one of them, but, in fact, all of them working together with the goal of understanding ourselves as people within a community. In his letter for the World Day of Prayer for Creation (this Sunday September 1), Pope Francis reminds us that ‘The life of a Christian, then, is one of faith, active in charity and abounding in hope…” He goes on “Christian salvation enters into the depths of the world’s suffering, which embraces not only humanity but also the entire universe, nature itself, and the oikos, the home and living environment of humanity.”
So we are challenged to put our faith into action and to develop our faith through authentic formation experiences so that we can engage with the world in a context of justice and solidarity. This past week we have been working on this balance with Year 8 celebrating Mass with Fr Duane, Year 12 Reflection Day, student leaders beginning the Tutu Foundation Courageous Leadership course and students in Years 10 – 12 participating in the Senior Winter Sleep Out; each of these activities reflects an aspect of the touchstones and they are all equally necessary to a life of faith.

Year 8 Mass
Taking time out to participate in the life of the Church is an important aspect of a Catholic school community. Last week, reflecting on the Year 8 Pastoral theme ‘My Beloved Son’, Year 8 students attended mass in our Memorial Chapel. Fr Duane talked about developing a life of faith and wisdom, reflecting on the reading about King Solomon. We are grateful to Fr Duane for the opportunity to pray together and participate in the mass which is the source and summit of Catholic culture and faith.

Reconciliation Action Plan Update
One of our RAP actions has been to install the Acknowledgement of Country in each of our classrooms. Over the last week we have had them installed in each room and they are looking great! The design is a physical reminder that we are a truly inclusive community and that we intend to honour the tradition and heritage of this land that we all learn and work on. We are grateful to Ms Berry, Mr Nolan and the students who were integral in the design.

National Science Week 2024
The school theme for the 2024 National Science Week was Species Survival – More than just sustainability.
This theme aimed to highlight the importance of science and innovation to ensure the survival and thrival of different species in an ever-changing world.
Science staff at ERC invited students to participate in a range of activities to deepen their understanding of sustainable practices to ensure the survival of endangered and critically endangered species.
- Ms Stella presented students with information about the types of fossils and the formation processes which result in fossils. As a special treat, students made chocolate cast fossils of shells and animals.
- Students made native bee hotels with Miss Berry. Bamboo with holes drilled into them were bundled into parcels and then placed around the school. As many Australian bees use pithy stems and pre-existing holes to nest, it is hopeful that the local community of native stingless bees will increase.
- Mr O’Dea assisted students with a scientific investigation to chemically analyse whale snot to determine which whales were healthy and which were ill. Students conducted visual colour tests, protein tests, glucose tests and pH tests to determine the overall health of the whale snot samples.
- Mr Gray asked students questions from a range of Science subjects, including a round based on the Science Week theme. Congratulations to Nino Todorov and Claude Vincent on winning the 2024 Science Week Trivia Competition.
- Students used microscopes to identify the microorganisms which live in pond water with Mrs Timmins. A variety of aquatic invertebrate species were observed, displaying the diversity of life found in water systems.
The “Guess What’s in the Box” competition was held for students throughout the week. Each day a clue was released to assist students in guessing what might have been hidden in the box. Students placed guesses inside the mystery box and the winning entry was drawn at the end of Science Week. The clues for this year’s mystery box were:
- Monday’s Clue: “I’m a type of bee.”
- Tuesday’s Clue: “I explore the great outdoors.”
- Wednesday’s Clue: “Capture, no recapture.”
- Thursday’s Clue: “What your physics teacher sounds like.”
- Friday’s Clue: “I fly with my little eye.”
The winning entry belonged to Nathan Anderson from Year 11 with his guess of “Drone”. Congratulations Nathan, we hope you enjoy flying the drone responsibly.
A massive thank you to all the Science Staff, especially Mrs Massanova, for all the effort and running activities during lunch throughout the week. It is great to see such a wonderful opportunity provided to students once again.

If any change has occurred/occurs in your family – separation, divorce, serious illness, the College should be notified as soon as possible. The College seeks to be supportive of families in such circumstances and such events always have a bearing on a child’s education. Likewise, a change of address, email or phone number (work, home or mobile) or emergency contact should be advised immediately.
If your son suffers from a medical condition it is vital that you inform the office of his condition and what treatment is required in an emergency. An emergency management plan must be developed for any students with serious conditions.
