Dear Parents and Carers,

You may have noticed in various media outlets reports on the continual trend of more and more families turning to independent schools for their child’s education. As Principal of this vibrant Catholic boys’ College, I believe this shift speaks to a strong desire among families for a holistic education that partners closely with parents in the formation of young men.

I firmly believe at the heart of this growing movement is the strength of relationships between schools and families. Here at our College, that partnership has never been more evident. In just the past few weeks, we’ve been blessed with an extraordinary level of parent engagement across a wide range of College events.

From last term’s Parent-Teacher Interviews, where so many of you took the time to sit down with your son’s teachers and engage meaningfully in his academic journey, to last week’s Year 10 Subject Selection Interviews, which provided important guidance as boys begin to shape their senior pathways — on each occasion your involvement was critical.

Likewise, our recent NAIDOC Assembly and the Semester Awards Assemblies have been powerful reminders of the community we continue to build together. Seeing so many families in attendance, celebrating academic excellence and honouring Indigenous culture and history, has been both humbling and inspiring. Your continued presence sends a clear message to your sons: their education matters, and they are supported.

We are also grateful for the many parents who go above and beyond by travelling long distances to support our students in their sporting endeavours. Whether it be those cheering on our Under 15 AFL team playing in Batemans Bay, or the dedicated families backing our Under 13 and Opens Rugby League teams recently competing in Wagga — your presence and encouragement mean the world to our young athletes. These efforts are another example of the strong community spirit that defines our College.

This level of engagement is not only deeply appreciated — it is central to our mission as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. We do not walk this journey alone. Our educational work is most powerful when it is a shared effort between home and school, and your ongoing support and participation help shape the strong, respectful and faith-filled community we strive to be.

This special event is not only a celebration of our shared identity and values but a wonderful opportunity to meet other families, support the College, and enjoy a memorable evening together. At the beginning of the term each of the boys made a commitment to learning for Semester 2.  As always we appreciate the support of all families who encourage the boys to rise to meet our expectations. This includes a commitment to arriving at school and class on time each and every day, sometimes being late is beyond our control, for example the bus is late or the train service is interrupted. However, it is important to teach the boys some of the things that hasten the morning routine, e.g. packing their bag the night before, ensuring that all parts of their uniform are ready the night before or getting up half an hour earlier in the morning

We greatly appreciate the support of parents in relation to attendance and punctuality and encourage all parents to allow natural consequences for absences and lateness – adopt a no excuses approach with your children. Allow your son to experience the consequence of lateness, this is a reminder that 3 unexplained lates will result in a 1 hour detention.

It also includes attention to wearing the uniform correctly and adhering to expectations in relation to personal presentation. This includes ensuring top buttons on shirts are done up at all times. Jumpers other than our red College jumper are not permitted. If your son has outgrown any part of their uniform please visit the College uniform shop which is open Monday afternoons from 12- 4pm and Thursdays mornings 7.30-11.30am

Additionally, on occasion we need to talk to the boys regarding the need to be clean shaven, we understand that the time when one needs to shave varies for every student. I respectfully remind families that this is an expectation of the College and encourage parents to have this conversation.

As you are aware, during this year, the College is focussing on the touchstone of Justice & Solidarity and, in conjunction with our brother and sister schools in the EREBB (Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders) network, our theme has been ‘Pilgrims of hope. Builders of peace’, in line with the church’s Year of Hope. All of these things have one thing in common: a firm foundation on the hope in the possibility that we can follow Jesus in this life and the next. Romans 15:13 states: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” We have so many reasons to hope that everyone will experience God’s fullness of life and as we walk towards a new Term, we are filled with gratitude and hope.
An important event this week has been joining with the Diocese and Bishop Brian to celebrate the solemnity of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop today. The Liturgy Prefects and other SRC representatives represented the College in an uplifting and joyful mass.

On a cold Thursday evening, 36 students in Years 7 – 9 joined together to support SAHSSI (Supported Accommodation Homelessness Services Shoalhaven Illawarra). Together, they have raised over $6100 to furnish a short term accommodation shelter. We listened to guest speaker Gillian Vickers about the range of services and how we can all support people who are in danger of homelessness. We also had an important discussion about domestic and family violence and how we can all be people who live up to the ideals of respect and inclusiveness so that everyone feels safe wherever we are. Thank you to Ms Schodde and Mrs Haines for organising, Mr Sjostedt, Mr Panozzo and Ms Berry for sleeping out and Mr Bourke, Mr Marsh & Mr Crapis for cooking breakfast.

At the beginning of this Term, the staff used their staff spirituality day to take a pilgrimage of hope from Minnamurra to Kiama, raising over $1800 for the Edmund Rice Foundation project on Timor Leste. We celebrated mass with Fr Chris at Ss Peter & Paul and reflected on the opportunity to be pilgrims of hope and builders of peace as a Catholic school community. It is timely then, that after Pope Leo has approved the Mass for Creation for the church that we also look for ways to be in solidarity with God’s creation. The church in Kiama invites you to the following opportunity:

Calling all people, who are passionate about our Federal government addressing Climate Change and Caring for Creation. Join our Letter Writing Afternoon on Sunday 17th August, 2.30 – 4 pm at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiama (Parish Meeting Room). You don’t have to be an expert. This week is the dedicated week of national action against bullying. The theme for this year is “Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up” particularly apt for our community in a year where we are focussed on the touchstone of Justice and Solidarity. This will be formally marked at the College during Week 6 Pastoral Lessons.

As a College we do many things to prevent bullying from taking place within our community.

• Relationships at Edmund Rice are built on respect.
• Diversity is recognised and celebrated
• Student voice is encouraged particularly in standing up against an action that is unkind
• Opportunities for genuine connection are fostered through a wide reaching Pastoral program that includes Peer Support, Peer tutoring and our Outdoor Education Program.
• Participation in a diverse range of extracurricular activities to foster connections across year groups with students who share common interests.
• Through information shared with Parents and Carers

On occasions when the young men in our community behave in a way that does not reflect the best versions of themselves we will need to pause and provide opportunity for reflection on the impact of their words and actions on others, encouraging a commitment to our College values and those expressed in the Gospels.

As a College we do not tolerate any form of bullying, pages 17-25 of the student diary provide some helpful information for families in relation to how to respond and report bullying, whether you are the victim or the upstander against bullying. From time to time the boys will inform a trusted family member before they tell us. In these circumstances we encourage parents and carers to contact us and allow us the opportunity to address the matter as soon as possible. There is no doubt that we share a common goal of ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for each boy. This is best achieved when we work in partnership with families. Please don’t hesitate to contact your son’s Pastoral Care Coordinator if you have any concerns.

Strengths Spotlight

This week we are spotlighting the Strengths of Positivity and Determination.

Positivity – Those who possess the positivity strength are optimistic, enthusiastic and energetic. They often use this strength to praise and encourage others, motivating them when they are discouraged.

Determination – Those who possess this strength display persistence and grit. They refuse to give up and always find a way to overcome obstacles. This strength plays a pivotal role in success, people with this strength recognise that although it might be hard it can still be done.

Within our school community we have witnessed these two strengths in the action on the sporting field, in our TAS workshops as major works were completed, HSC Trials, on the Ski fields and in the classroom setting Semester Two Goals. Talking about strengths as a family and encouraging the identification of strengths in action aids in the development and recognition of strengths both in themselves, in their peers and in their families.

Earlier this week, Year 12 commenced their Trial HSC examination period. During this first week of such an important period in their academic lives, I have been pleased to see immense focus and preparation from this cohort as they tackle these exams. The brotherly support that they have given one another during a time when stress and anxiety can show itself is a testament to their cohesiveness as a cohort and the quality of their character.

At this time, I would also like to point out that Digby Woods, our College Sports Prefect, was recently chosen as one of four flag bearers in the Third Test of the Wallabies v British Lions Series. It is always fantastic to see students from the College be honoured with such prestigious opportunities to represent themselves, the College and the Nation.

Year 9 Electives 2026

Preparations are in motion for Year 8 students to carefully consider and then select their electives for Year 9 2026. Whilst students have certainly enjoyed each of their subjects throughout Year 7 and 8, the prospect of choosing TWO electives for their studies next year has promoted an atmosphere of widespread excitement across the grade. Next Monday (11 August), during periods 4 and 5, Subject Coordinators will be presenting the elective course options which exist in their Key Learning Area to all Year 8 students.

Following this, students will be given an information booklet which is to be taken home for discussion with their parents before making on-line elective selections. Please note that students are very welcome to seek advice from their subject teachers, but in addition to this all members of the Year 8 Pastoral Care Team are most willing to be a sounding board for students.

Our talented ERC Stage Band delivered outstanding performances last Friday, 1 August at both St. Joseph’s Bulli and Lindsay Park Public School! From timeless classics by Debussy to the modern pop hits from the “K Pop Demon Hunters” soundtrack, the band showcased an impressive range and musical versatility. Our students were met with enthusiastic cheers, with both schools joining in the fun, demonstrating an impressive level of crowd participation via their singing and dancing. The dedication and hard work of our Stage Band students truly shone through, making these performances a memorable experience for everyone involved!

On Tuesday 29th July a group of 12 students from Years 7 and 8, competed in the South Coast Finals of 7’s Rugby Union. The Edmund Rice team, displaying tremendous skill, speed and toughness progressed through the day undefeated. The results of the day were as follows:

• Game 2 – v Woonona High School – 42-10 win
• Game 3 – v St John’s Nowra – 25 – 12 win
• Game 4 – v Albion Park High – 35 – 5 win

Our Under 13s Rugby League team wrapped up their campaign undefeated, winning all three games through grit, discipline, and teamwork.

They opened with a dominant 28–0 win over St Francis Xavier, setting the tone early.

The toughest match came against Red Bend, where the penalty count was stacked against them. The boys showed outstanding resilience, defending their line with determination.

There were strong performances across the field, with a special mention to Vila Schwenke for his impact—scoring the opening try and chasing down a full-field break to stop a certain Red Bend try. Unfortunately, an injury ruled him out for the rest of that game and the final match.

In the final clash, the team’s focus was clear—win it for Vila. They dug deep to secure a hard-fought 4–0 victory over Mater Dei, with Harry Thomson sealing the win with a clutch intercept try.

On Wednesday 30th July, the ERC Opens Rugby League team travelled to Wagga Wagga for the Country Cup. After a light training session to loosen the legs, the squad enjoyed a hearty meal at the RSL, followed by a memorable jersey presentation featuring a personalised rhyme and song for each player. The next day, the boys faced Mount Austin and Red Bend College in wet and muddy conditions. Despite the challenges, they dominated both games, showing maturity and resilience. They adapted well to the conditions, stuck to the game plan, and played with passion and pride, making the College proud. It’s difficult to single out individual players, as every member of the squad performed outstandingly well. That said, special mention goes to co-captains Flynn O’Mara and Ruben Mayers, who led superbly and continually broke through defensive lines. Youngest player Fletcher Couchman played above his weight, calmly directing the team around the park. Jack Manns was relentless in his powerful carries and punishing defence. The trip was a great success, both on and off the field, and the boys represented Edmund Rice College with pride, unity, and strength. We now look to the Country Cup Final at the curtain-raiser to the Panthers and Raiders game in Mudgee on 22 August.

The Edmund Rice College U15s AFL team has recently achieved some outstanding results, showcasing remarkable talent in the progressive statewide tournament. The team competed in the local qualifying gala day, going undefeated and setting the stage for an impressive run at the South Coast Regional Finals in Bateman’s Bay.

The team continued their stellar performance at the regional level, remaining unbeaten in all three of their games against high quality opposition. Their defense was particularly outstanding, conceding only a single goal throughout the entire tournament. Unfortunately due to a clash of dates with the Year 9 Ski Trip, the team is not able to compete at the next level, where I am sure that they would have given a very strong showing of themselves. Congratulations to the team on their outstanding achievements this year!

On a windy day at Ian McLennan Oval, ERC took on an unknown quantity in Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown. ERC had made some changes from their previous game due to unavailability with Cohen Martins agreeing to play in goal for the first time in years. The game started fairly evenly with both goalkeepers making excellent saves until finally Isaac Papakosmas opened the scoring with a great finish into the top corner. This was the cue for the floodgates to open with ERC scoring another seven goals (Leo Halios-Lewis x 2, Jarrah Longbottom x 2, Aidan Rayner, Christian Ugonotti, and Fabian Gaudiosi), having three goals disallowed for offside and hitting the woodwork three times. It was not all one way traffic though with Cohen making an amazing double save in the second half to keep a clean sheet.

Edmund Rice College Opens Football Team Advances to Finals After Thrilling Quarter Final Clash

On Tuesday 29th July, the Edmund Rice College Opens Football Team faced off against a strong St Gregory’s College Campbelltown side in the NSWCCC Knockout Quarter Final at Ian McLennan Park, Kembla Grange.

In a tightly contested match, both teams showcased grit, teamwork, and resilience. The score was locked at 1–1 after full time, pushing the match to a tense penalty shootout. In a standout performance, goalkeeper Andre Dzeparoski proved the difference, pulling off two crucial saves to help secure the victory and send Edmund Rice College through to the Finals Series.

The team will now prepare to compete at Valentine Sports Park on September 10, with high hopes of continuing their success and challenging for the state title.

On Wednesday 24 July, the 35th annual Tom Anderton Shield was contested between long-standing rivals Edmund Rice College and Holy Spirit College at the Collegians Sporting Complex. This proud tradition continues to be a highlight on the sporting calendar for both schools, showcasing the spirit, pride and talent of our Rugby League players.

The day featured matches across three age groups – Under 13s, Under 15s, and Opens – with Edmund Rice College putting on a dominant display across the board:

The Under 13s set the tone early with a commanding 62–0 win, demonstrating excellent structure, pace and discipline.

The Under 15s followed with a spirited 26–16 victory, finishing strongly to overcome a determined Holy Spirit outfit.

The Opens capped off the day with a confident 34–16 triumph, showcasing their experience and teamwork in front of a strong crowd of supporters.

Congratulations to all the players who represented the College with distinction. A special thank you to our dedicated coaching staff for their preparation and leadership, and to the students, families and staff who came along to support what was a fantastic celebration of Rugby League.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the Anderton Family, who continue to support this long-running and meaningful event, as well as to the Collegians Rugby League Club and the NRL Development Team for their ongoing partnership and assistance in making the day such a success.

Congratulations Creighton Meafou – NSW All Schools Rugby Union Selection

We’re proud to congratulate Creighton Meafou (Year 12) on his outstanding selection in the NSW All Schools Rugby Union team, playing in the Inside Centre position.

Creighton recently represented NSW in a highly competitive series, playing three matches against ACT, Queensland, and the NSW All Schools 2nd XV. His team delivered a strong performance throughout the tournament and went on to defeat the All Schools 2s in the Grand Final.

Creighton’s efforts on and off the field have not gone unnoticed, and he is now awaiting final confirmation for selection in the Australian All Schools team – a remarkable achievement and testament to his dedication and talent.

PROCEDURES FOR PARENTS / CARERS

Parent Appointments

As a College we respectfully request that any parent wishing to discuss a matter of concern with a member of staff contacts the relevant staff member via email or via telephone through the College Office and requests an appointment. Staff members will get back to you at their earliest convenience. Parents presenting at the College Office may be asked to make an appointment and return at a mutually convenient time. For specific information about who to contact please refer to your son’s diary on pages 6, 7, 30 and 31.

Collecting your son from school

A reminder to all families that should a circumstance arise where you need to collect your son from school before the end of the school day we require you to come to the College Office. Students will not be permitted to walk to the carpark or the street to be collected. If they leave to attend a pre-arranged appointment we request that this is communicated to the College Office in writing via note or email. If you wish to have someone collect your son that is not currently listed on TASS then you will be required to communicate this clearly in writing, you will also receive a call to verify that you did in fact authorise this arrangement. All students arriving late or departing early are required to sign in and out through the Student Office.

Change in Student/Family Circumstances/Contact Information/Medical Conditions

If any change has occurred/occurs in your family – separation, divorce, serious illness, the College should be notified as soon as possible. The College seeks to be supportive of families in such circumstances and such events always have a bearing on a child’s education.
