Dear Parents and Carers,

Last week offered a strong reminder of what makes our Catholic learning community so special. Within just a few days, we experienced both moments of celebration and sorrow – and through it all, our unity stood out.

Last week began with the Athletics Carnival, a fantastic celebration of energy, teamwork, and school spirit – superbly coordinated by Mr Timpano. It was wonderful to see students giving their best and cheering each other on, with smiles and encouragement all around.

The following day, we marked the annual Founders Anniversary of Blessed Edmund Rice, a significant occasion in our College calendar where individual students, staff, parents, and alumni were warmly acknowledged for their contributions and service.

Soon after, we gathered for a heartfelt Mother’s Day celebration. It was an opportunity to acknowledge and thank the incredible women in our students’ lives. The smiles of families and the generosity of our Parents and Friends Committee, teaching staff, and Year 11 Hospitality students and musicians made the afternoon truly memorable.

Sadly, later in the week, we faced the loss of former Deputy Principal, Mr Barry Walsh. His passing has touched the hearts of many. Yet, amid this grief, the strength of the ERC community has been deeply evident – in the prayers shared, the support offered, and the compassion shown. Moments like these reveal the level of care that clearly defines who we are.

Being part of a Catholic College in the Edmund Rice tradition means walking together through times of joy and times of sorrow. I thank each of you for continuing to make our College a place where faith, support, and connection can thrive.

Finally, we join with the wider Church and Edmund Rice Education Australia, in celebrating the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. May the Holy Spirit guide him in his service, and may his leadership inspire hope and courage in the journey ahead.

As part of our annual Founder’s Day celebration, we honoured the life and legacy of Blessed Edmund Rice by recognising individuals in our community who live out his values of faith, service, and justice.

Student recipients of the Edmund Rice Award for Justice and Solidarity were acknowledged for their outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and deep commitment to service. Congratulations to Nikolas Todorov (Year 8), Flint Kim (Year 9), Jensen Curbison (Year 10), Christiano Haddad (Year 11), and George Newell (Year 12) for embodying the Touchstone of Justice and Solidarity through their actions, compassion, and generosity.

We also recognised four dedicated staff members with Touchstone Awards for their significant contributions to our community:

• Mrs Helen Knowles for Gospel Spirituality,
• Mr Luke Fields for Justice and Solidarity,
• Mrs Lyn Hall for Inclusive Community, and
• Mr Andrew Brooks for Liberating Education.

Special acknowledgement was given to Mrs Judith Hurley for 25 years of exceptional service and spiritual leadership, and to Mr David Chard, recipient of the Parent Service Award, for his long-standing and generous involvement in the College Advisory Council and Finance Sub-Committee.

Finally, we proudly inducted six outstanding Old Boys into our latest Notable Alumni register: Brian Weir (Class of 1965), Larry Jennett (Class of 1965), David Lear (posthumously) (Class of 1966), Peter Rowles (Class of 1970), Peter McGovern (Class of 1975), and Professor Matthew Wand (Class of 1981). Their outstanding achievements and service beyond school exemplify the enduring impact of an Edmund Rice education.

Last Thursday, 8 May, we had the pleasure of welcoming over 500 mothers, grandmothers and mother figures to celebrate our annual Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea.

This year’s event, hosted by our new Parents and Friends group, featured a fresh new format, complete with lawn games, stand-up tables, and plenty of laughter and connection. A sincere thank you to the P&F for their outstanding efforts in creating such a warm and welcoming afternoon.

A special mention goes to our talented senior Hospitality students, guided by Mr Pierro, who prepared a delicious afternoon tea enjoyed alongside live music from members of the College band.

While yesterday marked Mother’s Day, every day is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible role you play in our lives, and for that, we are truly grateful.

The College’s Mother’s Day High Tea, held on the afternoon of 8 May, was made all the more special thanks to the exceptional performances of our talented music students. From heartfelt piano solos to lively ensemble numbers, the event was a true celebration of musical talent and community spirit.

Students from Years 7 to 12 performed a wide range of pieces, creating a warm and festive atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Performers included members of the College’s Stage Band and Jazz Band, along with students from the Year 10 and Year 11 Elective Music classes.

A special thank you goes to the two Year 10 students, Austin and Cooper, who welcomed mothers and families into the hall with beautiful ambient acoustic guitar music.

One of the highlights of the event was the Stage Band’s energetic renditions of crowd favourites such as The Nutbush, YMCA, and Blitzkrieg Bop. Featuring a strong contingent of enthusiastic new members from Year 7, the band had the audience clapping along and enjoying every moment.

Congratulations to all the students involved for their outstanding contributions to a truly memorable afternoon.

On Thursday the 8th May, Edmund Rice College hosted a truly memorable Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea — a heart-warming celebration of the special women in our lives. This event was not only a beautiful occasion for our College community but also a significant milestone for our talented Year 11 Hospitality students, marking their first major service event in their two-year course of study.

Under the guidance of Mr Pierro, Mrs McDonell, and Mr Sjostedt, along with the support of Mrs McFarlane and Mr Moran, the students worked alongside local catering legends Culinarius and the P&F Committee to deliver an afternoon to remember. The level of professionalism, warmth, and care shown by our students was nothing short of outstanding.

We extend our sincere thanks to all involved — especially our hardworking students — for showcasing the spirit, skill, and service at the heart of hospitality at Edmund Rice College. This was a shining example of what happens when passion meets opportunity. Well done, boys!

As we move towards the end of our first semester in 2025 it is important students are commencing their revision and preparations for upcoming assessments and subject examinations. If students would like some additional support with this the study support sessions are occurring on Thursday afternoons during Homework Club in the Library.

If students attend they will walk away with a number of practical strategies that have been proven to support the retention of subject information. In addition they can begin to independently develop positive habits for their remaining years at the College and beyond. If students are interested they simply need to fill out the following GOOGLE FORM and I will connect with them by email in preparation for the Thursday afternoon session.

Year 10 Subject Selections

This important process is fast approaching. Next week Heads of Departments will begin presenting to the students the options they have regarding subject choices offered here at ERC. Further communication for parents and families will be sent in preparation for our Information Evenings and Subject Interviews that shape the choices made for each student’s Higher School Certificate.

NESA HSC Minimum Standards Test Results

NESA HSC Minimum Standards Test Results have been sent to all students who sat these tests last term. Students can access their test report by first activating and then logging into their Students Online account.

The report will be found in the messages section of your son’s account. Students who have not yet achieved the NESA HSC minimum standard by achieving a Level 3 or 4 result will be enrolled in the next round of testing later this term.

Year 11 2026 SUBJECT SELECTION

Year 10 students will be attending Subject Information Sessions to commence the process for subject selections for Year 11 2025 on Tuesday 20 May in periods 4 & 5 and on Wednesday 21 May in Pastoral Care & period 1 and the Year 11 2026 Course Information Handbook will be issued to students and parents next week.

We look forward to supporting Year 10 students as they embark on this important process to set them up for success in their senior studies at the College. The Year 11 2026 Subject Selection Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 17 June from 5:00 – 7:00pm and it is expected that all Year 10 students intending to continue into Year 11 attend this evening with at least one parent/carer to obtain valuable information to support your son in choosing his courses.

2025 Trial HSC & Higher School Certificate Timetables

Year 12 students have been issued a hard copy of the 2025 Higher School Certificate Timetable. They can also view their personalised HSC Timetable by first activating and then logging into their Students Online account.

In addition, the Edmund Rice College 2025 Trial Higher School Certificate Timetable has been posted on the Year 12 Pastoral Care Google Classroom. The Trial HSC Examinations are scheduled from Monday 4 August – Monday 18 August.

Year 7-10 Junior Examination Timetable

Students in Years 7, 8 9 and 10 will sit Semester 1 Examinations as per the schedule shared with students this week and attached HERE.

Please remind your son to prepare for these assessment tasks by revising the content to be assessed which is outlined in the Assessment Task Notifications issued by his teachers.

A reminder the College Homework Club is available for students wishing to complete revision at school or seek assistance from teachers in the Narandha Learning Centre from 2:00 – 3:00pm after school each day.

One of the first steps in sparking an interest in reading is finding the right book. Whether it’s science, sport, music, gaming, fishing, history, dragons or mystery – there’s a book about it.

Choosing a book that aligns with your son’s interests or passions can make a huge difference to their attitudes to reading. For example, if they enjoy football, they can read a player’s biography, a feature article from a newspaper or specialist sports magazine, or they could read a fictionalised story that revolves around football.

According to the Discovering a Good Read Survey, non-fiction is a popular choice for boys. The top three subjects were history, biographies/autobiographies and science/technology. In terms of fiction, fantasy, mystery/crime and dystopian are the most popular genres.

Graphic novels and manga (Japanese comics) are also an excellent gateway into reading. The imagery offers a rich visual story. Apart from the traditional Marvel and DC comics, there are many ‘classic’ stories that have been adapted into graphic novels including Orwell’s Animal Farm, Stoker’s Dracula and Tolkein’s The Hobbit.

Many online games, movies, documentaries or serialised shows are also based on books. If your son is enjoying a particular TV show or film, finding the original book might also ignite interest. Popular movie adaptations include the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series, John Green novels, the Divergent series, Lord of the Rings, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, the Maze Runner series and the Percy Jackson series.

There are also many recommendations available on various websites and social media (eg. BookTok). These include:

On Friday May 2nd, the Edmund Rice Stage Band delivered a vibrant and polished performance at St. Michael’s Primary School in Thirroul, earning enthusiastic applause from students and staff alike. Their dynamic repertoire and tight ensemble playing showcased not only the group’s musical talent but also their commitment to sharing the joy of live music with younger audiences. A highlight of the performance was the impressive contribution from the band’s newest Year 7 members – who have quickly proven themselves to be valuable additions. Their confidence, skill, and teamwork on stage signal a bright future for the band as it continues to grow and inspire.

The Quota Youth of the Year competition recognises community involvement, leadership, academic achievements and public speaking skills of the entrants. After a rigorous application, the entrants undergo an interview in front of a panel followed by public speaking with both prepared and impromptu speeches. This year, both Edmund Rice students excelled this year with Nicholas Aivaliotis of Year 11 being awarded winner of the Public Speaking section and Sam Stevin of Year 10 was named Quota Youth of the Year for 2025. Well done gentleman!

Hundreds of students recently competed in the Southern regions heat of the Da Vinci Decathlon. The Edmund Rice teams prepared over the course of Term One, and faced the challenges in areas such as Engineering, Mathematics, English and Cartography. All of the teams provided creative and ingenious solutions to problems and worked well together to attain the following results:

Ali Hadi and Nicholas Aivaliotis represented the College at the Local Final of the Plain English Speaking competition held at Corrimal High School. Both students presented well informed and engaging speeches. Well done to Nicholas Aivaliotis of Year 11 who was a winner and will compete in the Regional Final of the competition.

On Thursday, May 1, Year 11 students took part in a rewarding interfaith excursion to the Nan Tien Temple and the Berkeley Islamic Mosque. Under the warm Unanderra sun, students began their day with a Tai Chi session on the steps of the Nan Tien Temple — the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere.

They explored the temple’s rich symbolism, rituals, and spiritual devotion, and engaged in a reflective Dharma talk led by two student Buddhist Reverends. Later, at the Berkeley Islamic Mosque, students were warmly welcomed with a halal barbecue lunch and the opportunity to share insights from the day.

Inside the mosque, Imam Ali delivered an engaging talk on Islamic beliefs, ethics, and rituals, answering the students’ many thoughtful questions. The day offered a valuable learning experience and strengthened interfaith understanding within our community.

Thanks to the Year 11 Pastoral Coordinators and the Year 11 RE teachers for their support on the day.

The Studies of Religion excursion to the Nan Tien Temple and Masjid As-Salaam Mosque provided an opportunity for students to be immersed in the different faith traditions. It incorporated a good balance of experience (Tai Chi) and useful information (discussion on Islam). The experience helped me to develop a more holistic understanding of the characteristics of Islam and Buddhism, which will undoubtedly be useful in our eventual HSC exams – Daniel Morozov (Accelerated Year 10 Student)

It was impacted by the generosity and faith of those who we met at the mosque, inviting us students into how they pray (5 times a day). – Tyler Boggis (Year 11 students)

The talk in the Islamic mosque was highly engaging, allowing me to grasp the basics of the Muslim faith, igniting an excitement in me to learn more. – Harrison Placek (Accelerated Year 10 Student)

The Year 10 Camp is attended by 160 students across the Morton National Park this week. Some students are doing a practice Duke of Edinburgh course in the Bungonia Gorge, Long Point and Wingello for their five days. While seven groups are completing an expedition and kayak of the Shoalhaven River, Tallowa Dam, Bendeela and Fitzroy Falls. There will be more photos and stories of this expedition in our next newsletter.

This week the Wellbeing Survey was conducted and a report on the results of the students responses will be followed up by the Pastoral Coordinators. A summary of the findings will be posted in our next edition.

As we prepare for the upcoming examinations for Years 7-10 it is important that our students use their time efficiently and with encouragement to maximize their academic performance. It can be a time to become anxious and stressed so it is necessary to support our students and ask questions or develop good study skills that will help them achieve their academic goals.

On behalf of the Leadership team I thank each teacher who assisted with the Year 10 Camp this week. While the presence of our staff is beneficial to our students in building upon their relationships it is also important that we recognize the commitment and value they have given to leave their loved ones, families, classes at school, other responsibilities we each have outside of our teaching day to be with and responsible for each boy. Without the teachers attending these outdoor camps the students would not have the opportunities or experiences to remember but also take away the many life skills of this challenging experience.

On Thursday 8th of May, student leaders from across NSW were invited to attend the annual Secondary Schools Leadership Program. On the day, School Captain Henry Jones and Vice Captain Jayden Washbourne were privileged to meet with members of both the NSW Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, taking part in a Q&A session with representatives from various political parties.

A highlight of the day was observing Question Time, where students witnessed NSW Premier Chris Minns and Opposition Leader Mark Speakman debate key issues, including the housing crisis and renewable energy. They also had the opportunity to meet with Ryan Park, our local Member for Keira, to discuss the importance of leadership in representing others.

Overall, the day was a great success, giving Henry and Jayden valuable insights into leadership in action and its vital role in public service.

Year 7 / 8 Oztag

Our 7/8 OzTag team put in a fantastic performance at the Regional OzTag Championships, narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot by finishing 3rd in their group. The team finished with 2 wins and 2 very tight losses. Impressively, the majority of the team were Year 7 students playing up an age group, showing fantastic skill, teamwork, and determination. Their strong performance bodes well for the future, and I’m excited to see what they can achieve in 2026!

Year 9 Oztag

The Year 9/10 OzTag team put in an outstanding performance at the Regional OzTag Championships, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final after a 2-2 draw in the semi-final against Warilla. Due to Warilla’s higher pool ranking, they advanced through, but our boys can be incredibly proud of their efforts. Impressively, the entire team was made up of Year 9 students playing up an age group, competing strongly against older and more experienced opponents – a promising sign for 2026!

Year 11 / 12 Oztag

The Opens Oztag team delivered exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the competition. Winning 3 out of their 4 round games, the team dominated their opposition with one particularly commanding victory by a margin of 8 tries. Their only loss came in a tightly contested match, where they fell short by just a single try. The semi-final clash against Warilla was a thrilling encounter, ending in a 4-4 draw. Despite matching Warilla in both attack and defense, ERC narrowly missed a place in the grand final, with Warilla progressing due to higher points from earlier rounds and going on to win the day.

The Edmund Rice College Under 14 Rugby League team delivered an outstanding performance at the Cochrane Cup, going undefeated across four dominant matches. They opened the day with a strong 20–6 win over Holy Spirit before recording a commanding 48–0 victory against Kanahooka. In the semi-final, the team maintained their momentum with a tough 20–6 win over Warilla. The boys saved their best for last, producing a clinical 24–0 shutout in the final against Albion Park to be crowned champions. A fantastic effort from the team, carrying on from last years triumph’s! The team now advances into the next round of the Cochrane cup.

Careers excursion to MyneSight – Industry Training Experience

Twenty students had the opportunity to visit MyneSight, a leading training platform in the Australian coal mining industry. The visit provided valuable insight into the real-world safety and induction processes required for working in mining environments.

During the visit, we:

• Observed demonstrations of Standard 11 Induction training, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency response.
• Participated in a simulated training environment where we learned about personal protective equipment (PPE), site safety procedures, and mine communication systems.
• Interacted with professional trainers who shared real-life mining experiences and answered our questions about safety protocols and job readiness.
• Gained hands-on exposure to VR-based and classroom training tools used to prepare new workers for high-risk environments.

This experience helped us understand the importance of safety culture in the mining sector and how platforms like MyneSight ensure every worker is properly inducted and competent before entering a site.

Careers Expo

On Tuesday 7 May all year 10 and 12 students visited the careers expo. Representatives of over 110 exhibitors were eager to answer the pertinent questions from our students.

Students and their parents also had the opportunity to visit the public session on Tuesday.
The expo featured opportunities to:

• Interacting with professionals – Speaking directly with industry representatives to learn about various roles and career pathways.
• Learning about qualifications – Gaining insights into the education and training needed for different careers.
• Exploring industries – Discovering a variety of fields such as healthcare, engineering, technology, trades, or the arts.
• Receiving career advice – Getting tips on resume writing, interview techniques, and job search strategies.
• Networking – Making connections with potential employers, training providers, or mentors.
• Trying hands-on activities – Participating in interactive displays or demonstrations related to different jobs.
• Clarifying interests – Reflecting on which career paths align with their personal strengths and interests.

The homepage will contain key information to keep you up to date on your student’s school day.

Push Notifications / Notification History

Schools will be able to send targeted notifications via the app, so that parents are only alerted to information that’s relevant to their child e.g., Extra-Curricular practice. You’ll also be able to acknowledge notifications and view and search notification history.

Attendance & Absences

Parents will be able to acknowledge and submit absences, as well as view the attendance history for their child on the go, making it easier for schools to ensure they have accurate and up-to-date information on student whereabouts.

Student Details

Parents will be able to view their student’s information including General information, MCEECDYA information, View and Update Medical Details, Illness Log records, Extra-Curricular History, Email Class Teachers, View and download Academic Reports, and any other additional customised data the school has made available.

Calendars

Parents will get access to their child’s electronic diary, as a day or month view, to keep up to date with their children’s activities. This includes a multi-student view for parents and the ability to include/exclude different calendar feeds.

Accounts

Parents will have the ability to access and make payments for School Fees and Events & Payments via links to Parent Lounge.

Parent Profile

Parents will be able to view their personal details, address information and login history, as well as submit updates to the address blocks. This will allow you to make sure that the school always has the most up to date and accurate information for contacting you, as well as provide you the ability to review what your account has been accessed.

PROCEDURES FOR PARENTS / CARERS

Parent Appointments

As a College we respectfully request that any parent wishing to discuss a matter of concern with a member of staff contacts the relevant staff member via email or via telephone through the College Office and requests an appointment. Staff members will get back to you at their earliest convenience. Parents presenting at the College Office may be asked to make an appointment and return at a mutually convenient time. For specific information about who to contact please refer to your son’s diary on pages 6, 7, 30 and 31.

Collecting your son from school

A reminder to all families that should a circumstance arise where you need to collect your son from school before the end of the school day we require you to come to the College Office. Students will not be permitted to walk to the carpark or the street to be collected. If they leave to attend a pre-arranged appointment we request that this is communicated to the College Office in writing via note or email. If you wish to have someone collect your son that is not currently listed on TASS then you will be required to communicate this clearly in writing, you will also receive a call to verify that you did in fact authorise this arrangement. All students arriving late or departing early are required to sign in and out through the Student Office.

Change in Student/Family Circumstances/Contact Information/Medical Conditions

If any change has occurred/occurs in your family – separation, divorce, serious illness, the College should be notified as soon as possible. The College seeks to be supportive of families in such circumstances and such events always have a bearing on a child’s education. Likewise, a change of address, email or phone number (work, home or mobile) or emergency contact should be advised immediately.

If your son suffers from a medical condition it is vital that you inform the office of his condition and what treatment is required in an emergency. An emergency management plan must be developed for any students with serious conditions.
