Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,
We all know about the parable of The Prodigal Son that Jesus shared with his disciples about the young teenager who was impatient and reckless in wasting his father’s generosity of an early inheritance (Luke 15.11-32). I appreciate that from time to time perhaps we too recognise a young person who may demonstrate similar impulsive actions as they learn from their mistakes to grow and mature. In this way, I want to express my thanks for the care and patience that ERC teachers together with parents show each of these young people in the same way that The Prodigal Son’s father did.
But what about the brother in the parable? The great majority of our students are the same brother, who are consistently punctual, diligent, polite, attentive, and grateful in regularly meeting College expectations. As we continue to both support, challenge, and forgive the ‘prodigal sons’ in our lives, let us never forget to acknowledge and indeed strongly encourage the often quiet and unassuming ‘brothers.’
As we prepare for the final week of Term 1, we are reminded that within our Inclusive Community touchstone, it is incumbent upon each of us to not only nurture the academic growth of our students but also to support their moral development. By acknowledging and celebrating the virtues of all students no matter where they are on their learning journey, we reinforce the values of humility and compassion that lie at the heart of a Catholic education in the tradition of Edmund Rice.

Last week the College Advisory Council met for the first time this year as we discussed the College’s strategic direction for the year ahead. In this meeting, we warmly welcomed Mrs Jacqueline Fitzgerald to the group. On behalf of the Chair of the Advisory Council, Mr Chris Lyon, l would like to also publicly thank Mr Michael Brannon, who has decided to conclude his time as a member of the Council. We thank Michael for his many years of generous and valued service to our community.
***
In this final newsletter for the term, please join me in celebrating the many rich learning experiences that have been a feature of our school year to date – both inside and outside the classroom. In congratulating our new Year 7 students on completing their very first Term of high school and making such a significant transition, it is also pleasing to see the continual growth in the large majority of students across the College. In thanking the ERC teachers and support staff for their continued commitment, I acknowledge the strong partnership that we enjoy with parents and carers for the benefit of the young men of ERC. As principal, I am very grateful to all who have worked towards further enhancing ERC throughout what has been a most rewarding Term. Please note that Day 1 of next Term is a Staff Spirituality Day (pupil-free) with all students commencing on Tuesday 30th May.
In conclusion, I am very pleased to announce that Mrs Nicole Herrald has recently joined ERC as a newly appointed member of the Counselling / Pastoral Team. We also welcome Ms Chloe Gaudiosi who will be commencing in Term 2. Ms Gaudiosi has experience teaching a range of subjects including Italian, English and HSIE subjects.
Best wishes.

Embarking on a journey to understand the complexities of the human body, a group of eager Year 9 students recently found themselves immersed in the fascinating world of anatomy at the University of Wollongong. This unique opportunity allowed them to delve deep into various body systems, including the excretory system, nervous system, heart, lungs, and brain, sparking a newfound appreciation for the intricate mechanisms that sustain life.
Throughout their time in the anatomy lab, the students were not mere spectators but active participants in their own learning. Engaging in hands-on activities and asking thought-provoking questions, they demonstrated a genuine enthusiasm for understanding the inner workings of the human body. For many, this experience served as a catalyst for further exploration and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of science.
As the experience came to a close, the students reflected on their experiences with excitement and enthusiasm. They had witnessed firsthand the beauty and complexity of the human body, gaining a newfound respect for the intricate systems that sustain life. For these Year 9 students, their adventure at the University of Wollongong anatomy lab was not just an educational outing but a transformative journey that ignited their curiosity and passion for science.

Spotlight on Poetry in Action Performances

Last Tuesday morning, 26th March, Edmund Rice College was alive with the power of words as we welcomed the dynamic performers from Poetry in Action. With two captivating performances tailored for our Year 8 and Year 9 students, the Br Pelin Hall buzzed with excitement and inspiration.
For our Year 9 cohort, the stage came alive with “Words that Changed the World,” a thought-provoking show by three talented actors from the Poetry in Action team. Through their riveting performance, students were taken on a journey through history, exploring the profound impact of influential words that have shaped our world. From powerful speeches to revolutionary poetry, the performance ignited a spark of curiosity and reflection among our students, reminding them of the transformative power of language. Some reflections from our Year 9 students include:
“The Poetry-In-Action incursion in late March opened up our eyes to how language is used for the betterment of society, or, at other times, for greed, manipulation, and/or personal gain. The team masterfully presented this through the use of acting, light-hearted humour, and an engaging plot line. Overall, the Year 9 students had a great time enjoying the performance, and would love to see the team return in the future!” – Daniel Morozov
“The energy they brought to the school was awesome. The Poetry In Action team effectively mixed their love of drama, poetry and theatre to teach and inform us about the meaning and uses of persuasive devices in writing, linking them to well known speeches and letters.” – Ben Pearson
“The incursion was engaging, with the presenters conveying a large variety of persuasive English techniques enjoyably and entertainingly.“ – Beshr Alchami
“The Poetry in Action incursion was an amazing experience! It opened my eyes to the techniques used by some of the world’s most powerful people, in a really fun and exciting way that was excellent in demonstrating the power of words. I’ve been able to apply some of these ideas to my own life, and it has given me a new outlook on the words I am exposed to everyday.” – Sam Stevin
“Last week during period 2, the Year 9 cohort was invited down to the Brother Pelin Hall for a supposed “talk” about the power of words in poetry, speeches, and day-to-day language. All of us were quite surprised however, when the three talented actors broke into a sophisticated play filled with everything from powerful speeches to funny songs. An overall funny and educational experience, I enjoyed having them here at our College.” – Francisco Martin
Meanwhile, our Year 8 students were treated to “Power of Poetry,” another captivating performance delivered by the skilled actors from Poetry in Action. This engaging presentation delved into the beauty and significance of poetry, showcasing its ability to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and express the complexities of the human experience. Through a dynamic combination of performance and interactive elements, students were encouraged to explore their own creative potential and embrace the rich tapestry of poetic expression.
Some thoughts from our Year 8 students include:
“It was fun and silly. I liked how they performed and taught at the same time.” – Kobe
“It is a good way to teach students about poetry.” – Yusuf
“It was exciting and I was left flabbergasted.” – Taj
“They made the room buzz with laughter.” – Noah
“The audience was connected with the actors and the crowd was filled with excitement as the play went on.” – Will
“I liked the impact they had on us by making poetry fun.” – Jerry
“It was a fun and different way to learn.” – Alex
“I love the conversations they had with the audience.” – Xavier
The Poetry in Action team’s performances left a lasting impression on our students, sparking meaningful conversations and igniting a newfound appreciation for the written and spoken word. Their ability to connect with young minds and convey the power of literature is truly commendable.

Year 11 Visual Arts Camp
Last Tuesday and Wednesday 26th and 27th March, Year 11 Visual Arts travelled to Hazelhurst Art Centre for the Annual Year 11 Art Camp. The students experienced a two-day intensive art workshop with artist Anthony Antoniou in the wonderful surroundings of the gallery. The students were privileged to work with an artist of such calibre. Anthony Antoniou is represented by Australian Galleries and has been a Finalist in various major prizes including The Dobell Drawing Prize, AGNSW; the Jacaranda Drawing Prize, Grafton Regional Gallery; The National Works On Paper Prize, Victoria; the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize, Sydney; the Hutchins Drawing Prize, Hobart; the Swan Hill Drawing Prize, Victoria and the Banyule Works On Paper Prize, Victoria.
The students worked in a surrealist style using charcoal and completed a series of exercises where they explored the qualities of both compressed and willow charcoal. They then embarked on a large-scale drawing which will form part of their Portfolio of Works. This was a valuable experience and a highly successful workshop.

Year 7E History Ancient Rome Dressing up in Togas
During history class on Tuesday 2nd April, the boys split up into 5 groups to make and dress up into Ancient Rome Togas. Mrs Kennedy brought 5 pieces of cloth (plain material) for each group to represent how the Ancient Rome people dressed in ancient times. The boys learnt how to put the Toga on and to see how it was worn by the wealthy citizens of Rome. We put a single piece of cloth that covers the whole body apart from the left arm to the right arm. They folded it under the left arm and wrapped it around their whole body and that’s how an ancient Toga is made. The boys really enjoyed the lesson. By Luca Astone 7E

Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation – Learning money lessons for life!
Our school recently participated in the Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation program, which included two interactive workshops designed to help students learn money lessons for life, be confident talking about money and make informed financial decisions.
Our Year 7 students attended the Spending and Saving Money workshops, where they explored how spending and saving choices today can affect future finances.
Our Year 9 students attended the Making Money work workshops, where they discussed different ways to make money and learned some practical skills for navigating the world of work.
Both the students and teachers enjoyed the workshops and learnt some important financial concepts and lessons about money. To learn more, check out the Talk Money website
Young people’s future success and financial security need to learn about money management and workplace rights. Young people may make wise financial decisions, stay out of debt and achieve their financial objectives by developing their understanding of financial literacy concepts including budgeting, saving, and investing. Similarly, educating young people on their legal rights at work including minimum wage rules, anti-discrimination laws, and safety standards can give them the confidence to defend their rights and speak up for themselves at work. Their future prosperity and well-being may be significantly impacted by these abilities and information. It was a really interesting and eye-opening experience and a well-put-together presentation. The students learned a lot and are keen to use the skills provided to make better financial decisions in their lives.
WELCOME to our staff at the College! Nicole Herrald. Nicole joins Natalie Potter on the College Counselling Team.

Police Youth Engagement Officers - Meeting With Year 7

On Tuesday morning, Police Youth Engagement Officers made a significant visit to Year 7 students of Edmund Rice College during the extended Pastoral Care session.
The focus of their presentation centred on common issues experienced by today’s youth, specifically addressing bullying, cyberbullying, and responsible social media usage. Through their interactive discussion, students were provided with essential insights into recognising, preventing, and addressing instances of bullying and cyberbullying within the College and online communities.
The Police Youth Engagement Officers also emphasised the importance of exercising responsibility and caution when navigating social media platforms, highlighting the potential consequences of reckless online behaviour.
As the year progresses, we intend on organising future sessions with NSW Police on issues prevalent to the Year group and their ongoing journey at the College.

Year 8: Term 1 Report
As we prepare ourselves for the end of another term, its a time to reflect on the journey of the Year 8 cohort. Overall, the Year 8 boys have shown a positive attitude and approach towards their daily lives at school and developed enormously in maturity and the way they present themselves to school each and every day. They should be commended on their positive contributions both inside and outside of the classroom, which are underscored by their willingness to live out the Gospel values each and every day.
Throughout the term, the Year 8 students have demonstrated a high level of dedication to their academic achievements. This has been noticed by various staff members as the boys have worked towards and completed their Term 1 assessments to a high standard across all subject areas. I would hope that this positive attitude to their studies continues into Term 2, as they prepare to receive their Semester 1 Academic Reports.
Beyond the classroom, the Year 8 cohort has shown compassion, empathy and a strong sense of responsibility towards making a positive difference in the world. This is evident by their daily contributions to the Mission collections which we are proud to say that Year 8 raised the highest funds to support CARITAS in the lead up to the Easter season. Many students also competed in the sporting arena this term through various sports such as Swimming, Cross Country, Mountain Biking, Soccer, Football and Rugby 7, just to name a few. We also wish those students participating in the upcoming Public Speaking (Week 2, Term 2) and Da Vinci Decathlon (Week 10, Term 1), all the very best!
Throughout this term, the Year 8 boys have engaged in a variety of topics discussed in their Extended Pastoral Care lesson. Overall, the ways in which the boys have participated in these Pastoral Care lessons has been very positive and would certainly have an impact on the overall success of the boys throughout this term. These Extended Pastoral Care lessons have included; a counsellor presentation, a Year Group Liturgy in the ERC Chapel, a talk on Racism, ways to enhance their study skills as well as a handball competition which saw 8E crowned as the winning Pastoral Care Class!
As we look back on Term 1, both Mr Crapis and myself are proud of the boys achievements and the way they have lived out our College Touchstones each and every day. As a Year Group we still have a way to go, however the boys should be commended on how much they have grown since the end of Year 7. Let’s carry with us the lessons learned, the friendships strengthened and the memories made to ensure that Term 2 is our best yet!
As always, “…Do Good, Be Good, Make smart choices!”
Be Safe and God Bless,

Year 11: Term 1 in Review
Term 1 has shown that our newest Senior cohort is undoubtedly ready for their final years of high schooling and the transition into tertiary education or the workforce. The Year 10 cohort of 2023 has shown growth and maturity since the first day of the College Calendar, supporting our newest Year 7 cohort through the Peer Support Program. It was fantastic to see approximately half the cohort give their holiday time to assist our youngest students invaluable guidance as they begin their journey at the College.
Following this, the College had the opportunity to celebrate the High Achievers from the HSC class of 2023. Immediately following this celebration, Year 11 students were treated to a HSC Symposium where former students passed on vital experience on the path that lies before this cohort over the next two years. Hearing from the Dux of the College and distinguished achievers engaged these fine young men and I know that they will be the better for hearing from our former students.
It was therefore prudent that our Enrichment Coordinator, Ms Shumack, introduced the Senior Study Skills program over Weeks 6 and 10 to solidify both what these boys have been hearing from their teachers and former peers. Various strategies like study planners, assessment scaffolds and executive functioning have been explored to ensure that our students have a growth mindset in their own learning. I thank Ms Shumack, alongside Mrs Ham, for providing this opportunity.
As our wider College community knows, having goals is vital to ensuring success in all fields undertaken by our students. Mr Sirianni (Director of Technologies & Innovation) and Mr Cajar (Careers Advisor) oversaw the Senior Goal setting process that looks to build upon previous successes, prioritise physical and mental health, and consolidate connections between schooling and post-schooling opportunities. Seeing these boys undertake their goal-setting process with vigour makes me proud to be overseeing their pastoral growth at the College.
The senior years of one’s schooling can obviously be stressful and pressuring to many young people. It is therefore fortunate that our College can rely upon the Counselling Team to provide guidance and support if and when students should ask for it. Ms Potter (Counsellor/Psychologist) was able to provide guidance and reassurance to Year 11 students earlier in the term that will no doubt go a long way to supporting their mental health and wellbeing during the course of their studies and assessments. Focusing on areas such as physical health, work life balance, procrastination and supporting each other, Ms Potter’s presentation continued the College trend on erasing the stigma around mental health and promoting a positive mindset within a student’s academic pursuits.
As we look towards Term 2, Year 11 will engage with a variety of Pastoral Care activities that further seek to instil the values of the College that make it so great – Leadership, Belonging, Advocacy, Service and Wellbeing. I look forward to the continued success of this cohort and thank the parents and families for their ongoing support of what our College represents.

NSWCCC Swimming Championships
The NSWCCC Swimming Championships were held on Thursday 28th March It was a standout day for the boys of Edmund Rice College as they exemplified the school’s values with their outstanding performances.
In the fiercely competitive medley relay, comprising Callum Ardita, Jake Schulze, Gwil Barnes, and Jye Prem, our team narrowly missed clinching the third spot. Remarkably, competing in the U13/14 category, they showcased exceptional talent, shaving off an impressive 3.98 seconds from their initial time recorded at the Diocesan Championships. Their determination was evident as they trailed the third-place finishers by a mere 0.9 seconds.
Equally commendable was the performance of our all-age relay team, teamwork, narrowly missing out on securing the third position.

Staff members will get back to you at their earliest convenience. Parents presenting at the College Office may be asked to make an appointment and return at a mutually convenient time. For specific information about who to contact please refer to your son’s diary on pages 20 and 21.
Collecting your son from school
A reminder to all families that should a circumstance arise where you need to collect your son from school before the end of the school day we require you to come to the College Office. Students will not be permitted to walk to the carpark or the street to be collected. If they leave to attend a pre-arranged appointment we request that this is communicated to the College Office in writing via note or email. If you wish to have someone collect your son that is not currently listed on TASS then you will be required to communicate this clearly in writing, you will also receive a call to verify that you did in fact authorise this arrangement. All students arriving late or departing early are required to sign in and out through the Student Office.

Change in Student/Family Circumstances/Contact Information/Medical Conditions
If any change has occurred/occurs in your family – separation, divorce, serious illness, the College should be notified as soon as possible. The College seeks to be supportive of families in such circumstances and such events always have a bearing on a child’s education. Likewise, a change of address, email or phone number (work, home or mobile) or emergency contact should be advised immediately.
If your son suffers from a medical condition it is vital that you inform the office of his condition and what treatment is required in an emergency. An emergency management plan must be developed for any students with serious conditions.
Please verify all information via the TASS Parent Lounge.
